“He’s going to be extremely forceful to talk in opposition to any such hate,” stated Jean-Pierre at Wednesday’s White Home press briefing. “While you’re silent, you’re complicit.”

Final week, throughout a gathering with civil rights leaders, the president advised reporters he had not contacted the victims’ households as a result of a type of households expressed that they didn’t need to be contacted. “Everybody offers with profound loss otherwise,” stated Biden on the time.

Nevertheless, the Biden spokesperson famous the president’s remarks in Florida final weekend whereas surveying the injury within the state brought on by Hurricane Idalia, the place Biden advised the Jacksonville group, “Our hearts are with you,” and declared that racism and home terrorism “won’t prevail in America.”

TheGrio requested the White Home whether or not it felt it was vital to contemplate new laws to handle racist assaults just like the one which occurred in Jacksonville, particularly an anti-Black hate crime invoice much like the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which was signed into legislation by President Biden in 2021 to handle the rise of hate in opposition to Asian Individuals and Pacific Islanders through the pandemic. Civil rights leaders urged President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to convey the summit to Florida, the place DeSantis has banned Black historical past curriculums and variety applications throughout the state.

“Florida is at the moment the epicenter of an authoritarian takeover that poses a direct hazard for all the nation,” acknowledged Burney-Clark, who stated any summit that involves the Sunshine State ought to include “fact-based options.”

She added, “The state has not had or seen aid from his authoritarian methods since he has been in workplace. And so, sure, it will function an ideal backdrop.”
