After years of residing in a meals desert and having to journey miles away for meals, residents in North Flint, Michigan, can store for contemporary produce and groceries whereas supporting members of the predominantly Black group, due to the just lately opened North Flint Meals Market Cooperative.
The North Flint Meals Market Cooperative (NFFM) is Flint’s first cooperative grocery. Not like conventional grocery shops, that are run by companies, NFFM is a co-op owned by roughly 900 group members who’ve invested within the retailer.

Positioned at 5402 Clio Highway in Flint, Flynn says the brand new grocery retailer was over ten years within the making, with the group having to beat the COVID-19 pandemic, higher-than-expected tools prices, funding struggles, and extra. Now that its doorways are open, Flynn describes it as “a second of delight for our group. “That is Ujamaa — cooperative economics — in motion. We personal it,” stated Flynn per Flint Courier Information.
