Homecoming season at traditionally Black schools and universities (HBCUs) is often related to celebration, however for 2 universities in Mississippi and one in South Carolina, the previous two weekends’ reunions have been marred by violence.

Unconnected shootings at Jackson State College in Jackson, Miss., and Alcorn State College in Lorman, Miss., left one girl useless and a number of individuals injured, together with at the very least one little one within the Jackson incident.

In Alcorn, the taking pictures that claimed the lifetime of 29-year-old Brekyra Fisher of Vicksburg, Miss., occurred on campus at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, close to the college’s Industrial Know-how Constructing, in response to the Claiborne County coroner’s workplace. Two others have been injured and no arrests have been made right now.

In line with the Hinds County Sheriff’s workplace, one little one was injured in a taking pictures on Saturday night close to the tailgating part at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the place the homecoming soccer sport between Jackson State and Alabama State College was performed. The kid was transported to the College of Mississippi Medical Middle; there isn’t any suspect data out there but.

The shootings on the HBCU homecomings in Mississippi comply with a weekend the place one girl was killed and a male was shot on the campus of South Carolina State College, an HBCU in Orangeburg, S.C., throughout homecoming festivities on the night time of October 4th. Neither of the 2 who have been shot was a scholar on the college, however have been visiting pals.

The girl who died was recognized as 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler; she was killed in a residence corridor on campus.

As within the different incidents in Mississippi, there have been no arrests within the incidents straight related to these shootings, although an arrest was made relating to an individual on campus who introduced and pointed a gun right into a crowd throughout a homecoming exercise on that Saturday night time.
