UMG Launches The Berry Gordy Music Industry Scholarship

Common Music Group launches a brand new music scholarship in Berry Gordy’s honor.

Motown pioneer Berry Gordy is receiving large honors from Common Music Group with the institution of the Berry Gordy Music Trade Scholarship at The Herb Alpert Faculty of Music.

Introduced on June 30 in partnership with The UCLA Basis, UMG has established a brand new scholarship to assist high-achieving college students within the college’s Music Trade Program, Music Week studies. The scholarship is known as in honor of the legendary report producer, songwriter, and entrepreneur who based Motown Data, essentially the most profitable Black-owned enterprise in Sixties America.

Increasing on the 2024 launch of The UCLA Berry Gordy Music Trade Heart, which serves as a analysis and schooling hub for profession improvement within the international music enterprise, the newly introduced annual scholarship will assist a scholar displaying excellent promise and monetary want. Recipients will probably be named Berry Gordy Students and obtain funding towards tuition, housing, and different instructional prices.

“I’m thrilled that my good friend Sir Lucian Grainge and Common Music Group have dedicated to assist this programme with their endowment that may assist open doorways for a lot of extra college students and proceed to pave the best way for music to be a pressure for good and alter,” Gordy stated in a press release.

The Berry Gordy Music Trade Scholarship aligns with UMG’s Sounds of the Future marketing campaign, which helps Black creativity and fairness within the music business. Now in its third 12 months, the initiative has expanded to incorporate applications like Roots of Music in New Orleans and Women Make Beats in Los Angeles.

The director of the Gordy Heart will choose scholarship recipients who could also be eligible to proceed receiving the scholarship in subsequent years, based mostly on monetary want and tutorial efficiency.
