Like many social media customers, Tyler Perry is flabbergasted by the wildfires blazing by the Los Angeles space. This weekend, the movie producer opened up about a few of the issues he’s witnessed for the reason that fires began on Jan. 7.

“Watching a daughter use a backyard hose to attempt to defend her 90-year-old mother and father’ residence as a result of their insurance coverage was canceled was simply gut-wrenching to me,” Perry wrote on Instagram.

Earlier than the Palisades and Eaton fires burned over 30,000 acres of land, 1000’s of Los Angeles residents had been reportedly dropped from their residence insurance coverage firms as these firms selected to cancel sure insurance policies. Just lately, the state’s largest residence insurer, State Farm Common, determined to not renew 30,000 home-owner insurance policies once they expired. This determination follows a rising development within the California residence insurance coverage panorama, the place insurers have both diminished or canceled their protection within the state because of the frequency of wildfires and the excessive prices of doing enterprise there.

“Does anybody else discover it appalling that insurance coverage firms can take billions of {dollars} out of communities for years after which, rapidly, be allowed to cancel thousands and thousands of insurance policies for the very folks they grew to become wealthy on?” the movie producer added. “Individuals who have paid premiums all of their lives are left with nothing due to pure greed.”

Although California affords the “FAIR Plan Insurance coverage,” the state residence insurance coverage coverage comes with a big premium pricetag but restricted protection for widespread dangers like theft, legal responsibility or flooding harm. Moreover, the continuing wildfires are projected to be the most expensive in U.S. historical past, as consultants estimate $50 billion in financial harm.

Whereas these fires have unveiled the grasping tendencies of companies and companies, varied group efforts have risen in an effort to assist these affected by the wildfires.

“As I’m within the technique of attempting to determine what steps to take to do all I can to assist as many as I can, I’m holding everybody in my prayers,” Perry concluded.
