Although he’s prohibiting authorities companies from marking Black Historical past Month, President Trump on Thursday held an occasion on the White Home celebrating the standard monthlong commemoration although he ended up largely celebrating his election win and plans for a Nationwide Backyard of Heroes.

At one level, the president knowledgeable the gang that he gained a better share of Black voter assist in 2024 than every other Republican presidential candidate (in 48 years … he overlooked that final half).

U.S. President Donald Trump, joined by golf legend Tiger Woods, speaks throughout a reception honoring Black Historical past Month within the East Room of the White Home on February 20, 2025 in Washington, DC. “One of many huge causes I’m president right this moment is due to the Black vote, and I all the time admire it,” Trump stated. “It is a very particular time. It’s Black Historical past Month. We love you all, we’re going to work with you. We’re gonna make America better than ever earlier than and we’re gonna do it collectively.”

Flanked by golfer Tiger Woods and Republican South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, the president then requested if he ought to search a 3rd time period, although legally he’s confined to 2.

Exhibiting the partisan make-up of the gang, composed of celebrities and different supporters, attendees responded by chanting “4 extra years! 4 extra years!”

Because the occasion was underway, CNN reported that Charles Q. Brown, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and a Black man, is on an inventory of generals the Trump administration might quickly hearth. His crime? Advocating for range within the ranks of enlisted women and men.

Trump has veered considerably from broadly accepted views on racial disparities, throttling range, fairness and inclusion applications in any respect authorities companies.

Protection Secretary Pete Hegseth, emphasizing machismo over range, declared “Id Months Useless.”

“I feel the one dumbest phrase in army historical past is ‘our range is our energy,’” Hegseth stated informed Pentagon workers at latest city corridor.

Due to that new directive, the Maryland Nationwide Guard withdrew from an occasion celebrating the nation’s first civil rights chief, abolitionist Frederick Douglass.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy kicked off Black Historical past Month by tweeting a ban on “celebrations primarily based on immutable traits or every other identity-based observances,” which he stated “do nothing to maintain planes within the air, trains on the tracks or ports and highways safe.”

The Trump Administration can also be transferring to revamp the best way Black historical past is taught in colleges whereas treating the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a regulation supposed to guard alleged white victims of racism.

On Feb. 14, the Division of Schooling on February 14 despatched a letter to American colleges accusing them of violating the act and discriminating in opposition to White and Asian college students with “pervasive and repugnant race-based preferences and different types of racial discrimination which have emanated all through each aspect of academia.”

The letter means that range applications place “distinctive ethical burdens” on and “stigmatize college students who belong to explicit racial teams primarily based on crude racial stereotypes.” That’s seen a prelude to a historic whitewashing that may downplay slavery and Jim Crow legal guidelines as a result of they don’t align with Trump’s imaginative and prescient of a “patriotic training.”

Regardless of all of this, Trump acquired a heat reception on the Black Historical past Month occasion. “Below our administration, we honor the indispensable function Black Individuals have all the time performed within the immortal reason for one other date: 1776,” he stated.

The president went in to share the story of Prince Estabrook, an enslaved man who grew to become the primary Black soldier to battle within the American Revolutionary Warfare.

Trump stated Estabrook would amongst these honored with a statue in his Backyard of Heroes “together with revolutionaries like Booker T. Washington, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.” Black Individuals from all walks of life, together with athletes like Muhammad Ali and Kobe Bryant, might be included within the backyard.

“We’ve made tribute to those heroes and so many others, however not just because they’re Black heroes, but in addition as a result of they’re actually American heroes who encourage all of us very a lot,” Trump stated.
