Travel ban on Issa Tchiroma sparks fierce storm in Cameroon

On 31 July 2025, Cameroonian presidential candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary was barred from flying to Senegal at Yaoundé Nsimalen Worldwide Airport.

Tchiroma, who leads the Entrance for the Nationwide Salvation of Cameroon (FSNC) social gathering, was accompanied by his daughter. The pair supposed to go to the grave of former president Ahmadou Ahidjo in Dakar.

Eyewitnesses and native media report that airport officers instructed Tchiroma he couldn’t journey, citing undisclosed “orders from above”.

Notably, officers supplied no written documentation, warrant, or authorized justification for the journey ban.

As of 1 August, the Cameroonian authorities has remained silent, intensifying hypothesis that the choice was politically motivated.

POLITICAL CONTEXT DEEPENS PUBLIC SUSPICION

Tchiroma’s sudden journey restriction comes amid his energetic marketing campaign for Cameroon’s 12 October 2025 presidential election.

In June 2025, he resigned from his authorities submit, publicly criticising President Paul Biya’s administration as “damaged” and “paralysed”.

Since launching his presidential bid, Tchiroma has known as for structural reforms, promising to dismantle the present regime and restore constitutional order.

His push for an opposition coalition has gained momentum in current weeks.

The Issa Tchiroma journey ban’s timing, coinciding with the intensifying coalition-building efforts, has fuelled fears of electoral manipulation.

LEGAL UNCERTAINTY FUELS PUBLIC OUTRAGE

Authorized specialists and civil society organisations are elevating critical constitutional considerations. Cameroon’s legal guidelines assure residents the liberty of motion, but Tchiroma’s ban was issued verbally, and not using a court docket order or authorized precedent.

Authorized students and human rights observers argue that the journey restriction on Issa Tchiroma could violate Article 13 of the Common Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which ensures people the fitting to go away any nation, together with their very own, and to return.

OPPOSITION LEADERS CONDEMN THE MOVE

Opposition figures, together with members of the Cameroon Renaissance Motion (MRC) and the Social Democratic Entrance (SDF), have strongly condemned the journey ban.

They describe it as a direct assault on democracy, warning it may undermine the legitimacy of the upcoming vote.

Sources near Issa Tchiroma Bakary have acknowledged the challenges posed by the journey ban however harassed their dedication to persevering with political actions and dialogue forward of the election.

A TURNING POINT IN CAMEROON’S 2025 ELECTION

Society accuses President Paul Biya of political repression, aiming to restrict honest competitors. Human rights teams have constantly condemned the federal government’s actions, together with arbitrary arrests and crackdowns on protests.

As of August 2025, the African Union (AU) has not made a proper assertion, however authorized specialists and monitoring teams stay vigilant.
