The twenty ninth Black Harvest Movie Competition, themed “Revolutionary Visions,” pays tribute to the wealthy historical past, politics and artwork that commemorate the extraordinary legacy of revolutionary struggles inside the Black diaspora. It highlights the interconnection of Black experiences worldwide, from the hardships of the Center Passage to the battles towards apartheid and the combat for racial fairness and human dignity throughout the Civil Rights Motion. These “Revolutionary Visions” invite us to discover the expansive terrain of Black creativeness, a tapestry of boundless creativity that transcends temporal and spatial boundaries.

Since its inception in 1994, the Black Harvest Movie Competition has stood as Chicago’s annual platform for movies that illuminate, rejoice and share the experiences of Black, African American, and African diaspora communities. Following the demise of the esteemed movie critic and co-founder of the Black Harvest Movie Competition, Sergio Mims, final fall, the Gene Siskel Movie Heart has established the Sergio Mims Fund for Black Excellence in Filmmaking. This fund is a testomony to Mims’ dedication to offering a voice and platform for the rising technology of Black filmmakers.

This yr’s competition is being curated by Jada-Amina and Nick Leffel, promising an array of thought-provoking and evocative movies that delve into the varied narratives of the Black expertise. By this cinematic celebration, the Black Harvest Movie Competition continues to be a significant conduit for the amplification and appreciation of Black voices on this planet of filmmaking.

As we immerse ourselves within the “Revolutionary Visions,” we’re reminded of the enduring power and resilience of Black communities all through historical past. The competition serves as a testomony to the ability of storytelling and visible artwork in preserving, commemorating and galvanizing the continuing combat for equality and justice for all.
