Teachers Union File Lawsuit Against NYC and Mayor Adams

The United Federation of Lecturers has taken authorized motion in opposition to NYC and Mayor Eric Adams to stop the proposed cuts from the town’s college funds.

The United Federation of Lecturers has taken authorized motion in opposition to New York Metropolis and Mayor Eric Adams to stop the proposed $2 billion cuts from the town’s college funds. The lawsuit follows the Adams administration’s announcement earlier this 12 months of almost $550 million in cuts for the present fiscal 12 months, with extra plans for cuts that would attain $2 billion, per a UFT press launch on Dec. 21.

The lawsuit represents the second important problem to Mayor Adams relating to funds cuts, with DC 37, the town’s largest public sector academics union, submitting the same lawsuit earlier this month. UFT President Michael Mulgrew criticized the administration, saying, “The administration can’t go round touting the tourism restoration and the return of the town’s pre-pandemic jobs after which create a fiscal disaster and minimize schooling due to its mismanagement of the asylum seeker drawback.”

In response to the lawsuits, Mayor Adams acknowledged the union’s obligation to characterize their members and famous that disputes amongst buddies typically result in authorized motion. The UFT’s lawsuit contends that the town is legally barred from decreasing college funding except total metropolis revenues expertise a decline.
