SZA defended Cher throughout an interview with Leisure Tonight after the “Imagine” singer mistakenly introduced “Luther Vandross” because the file of the 12 months winner on the Grammys on Sunday night time; the award truly went to Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther,” a tribute to the R&B singer who died in 2005.

“We share the frequency of the tune,” SZA mentioned, referring to Vandross and Cheryl Lynn’s 1982 rendition of “If This World Have been Mine,” which is sampled in “Luther.” “Like, that’s his frequency that allowed us to win and that allowed it to be memorable. So she’s not flawed. And he or she’s from that period — she most likely actually knew Luther Vandross.”

SZA added, “After all her mind and vitality is connecting that vitality to the vitality that we’re sharing. We’re mooching off of what Luther already gave us. So we’re grateful. It’s like I want I may converse to him.”

She then mentioned instantly into the digital camera, “Thanks, Luther.”

Cher, who acquired the lifetime achievement award at this 12 months’s Grammy ceremony, was readily available to current the file of the 12 months award. When saying the winner, she mistakenly mentioned, “Oh, the Grammy goes to Luther Vandross” (mispronouncing his surname as “Grandoss”). She shortly realized the error and corrected herself, including, “No, Kendrick Lamar! The Grammy goes to Kendrick Lamar.”

When accepting the award, Sounwave — one of many producers behind “Luther” — mentioned on stage, “In the beginning, let’s give a shout-out to the late, nice Luther Vandross.”

Lamar echoed the sentiment, including, “That is what music is about: Luther Vandross. That is particular for me. I’ve acquired to take my time, as a result of he’s one among my favourite artists of all time. They granted us the privilege to do our model of [‘If This World Were Mine’]. Once we acquired that clearance, I promise you, we rattling close to all dropped a tear, as a result of we all know how a lot him and Cheryl Lynn poured into that file. Having the ability to put our vocals of it proves that we’re considerably worthy of being simply as nice as them people. They granted us that.”
