Supporters rally as Ben Jealous challenges ouster from Sierra Club’s top post

The Sierra Membership, the oldest not-for-profit environmental group, has fired Ben Jealous as its govt director. Jealous, a former Maryland gubernatorial candidate and director of the nationwide NAACP, has vowed to struggle the choice and has employed civil rights attorneys to symbolize him.

The Sierra Membership’s Board of Administrators made the unanimous determination on Aug. 11, after inserting Jealous – its first Black govt director – on administrative go away for the month of July. 

Jealous’ two-year tenure with the group turned rocky shortly after he was employed in January 2023 to steer the group out of a $40 million deficit. 

Jonathon Berman, chief communications officer for the Sierra Membership, issued an announcement by way of e-mail shortly after the board’s determination. “Following an in depth analysis of his conduct, the board of administrators unanimously voted to terminate Ben Jealous’ employment for trigger,” Berman stated. 

Jealous issued an announcement Aug. 12 defending his work with the environmental rights group and vowing to struggle the board’s determination.

“I’m troubled by the Sierra Membership’s method during which they parted methods with Ben Jealous, a person who has carried himself with dedication, professionalism, and integrity within the time I’ve recognized him,” Sharpton stated in feedback posted on Instagram. “There are critical racial implications in firing a Black man of Ben’s caliber, on this trend, at a time when range is below assault.” 

The civil rights chief supplied himself as a possible mediator or steered one other trusted third get together.

“Somebody clearly should step in to carry a decision to this difficulty,” he stated. “I urge the Sierra Membership to come back to the desk and put this chapter behind all of us.” 

William Moll, chair of the Tennessee Chapter of the Sierra Membership stated that whereas the board’s determination might have been unanimous, there may be nice help for Jealous in chapters of the Sierra Membership throughout the nation.
