It’s a pleasant thought—the concept that racism in America will die out with older generations of racist white folks. It’s the sort of optimism that may legitimize the assumption that the nation is not less than headed towards a post-racial period. Sadly, these racist youngsters maintain getting in the best way of the narrative.

All one must do is Google the phrases “racist Snapchat” or “racist promposal” to know that the present crop of excessive school-age teenagers in America are removed from resistant to the affect of bigotry and anti-Blackness.

On Monday, at Shawnee Mission East Excessive Faculty in Prairie Villiage, Kansas, dozens of scholars walked off of campus throughout college hours in protest of an incident involving a Black feminine pupil and a white male pupil who was caught on video charging in direction of and attacking the Black teen after calling her the N-word twice.

From the Kansas Metropolis Star:

At 11 a.m. Monday, a mass of scholars walked out of sophistication and marched outdoors of Shawnee Mission East, chanting “We wish change,” “Have our backs” and “What number of extra instances.”

The walkout was sparked by the current altercation that college students characterised as a hate crime and stated despatched the lady to the hospital. However a number of of the excessive schoolers argued it was solely the most recent in a collection of racist incidents they really feel have occurred with out college leaders taking applicable motion.

College students held indicators that learn, “We demand motion! Defend college students of shade,” “We don’t really feel secure,” and “Take motion now.” They referred to as on college leaders to take stronger steps to eradicate racism and concern extra critical self-discipline for discrimination and hate speech.

It’s a narrative we’ve seen play out over and over: A viral incident involving racist bullying at a faculty turns into a trending information story, which inevitably opens the floodgates for college students at that college to testify about how they’ve additionally been affected by the longstanding racist habits by white college students or employees that they are saying routinely will get ignored or shrugged off by college officers.

“This has been an ongoing concern with racism at East. There are a number of conditions which have occurred over and over,” stated senior Charlize Littlejohn, who was within the hallway when the battle between the 2 college students broke out. “I feel we’re all simply actually bored with attempting to get change and it simply not taking place. We’re simply exhausted. Making an attempt to go to class, it actually impacts us.”

In response to the Kansas Metropolis Defender, the episode started when the Black pupil confronted a white feminine pupil about her use of racial slurs. That confrontation reportedly didn’t lead to any bodily violence. What the video reveals is the Black teen saying, “Don’t say nothing except you’re gonna come say it to my face,” to which the white male pupil, who didn’t look like a part of the preliminary confrontation, responded by shouting on the Black pupil to “shut the f**ok up!” The Black pupil then rotated to ask who stated it, and that’s when the white pupil recognized himself, charged in direction of her whereas shouting racial slurs, then pushed her, which resulted within the two college students exchanging blows.

“We had been all there. All of us watched it. It was emotional and it was traumatizing,” Littlejohn stated. “I would like issues to alter. All people who was there watching it, they’re not going to really feel secure. I’m not going to really feel secure at school. As a result of that might have been anyone. He may have completed it to anyone. And I feel that’s simply scary one thing like that may occur inside a faculty.”

The Defender reported that each college students had been suspended, however that wasn’t confirmed by college officers. District spokeswoman Kristin Babcock advised the Star “she couldn’t touch upon the incident as a consequence of pupil privateness points,” however she did give the usual spiel about how racism is unacceptable that’s typically given by college directors at faculties and districts the place college students declare racism is extraordinarily acceptable.

“We take incidents of racism and bodily violence very critically,” Babcock stated. “We do have a code of conduct in place, and we observe our insurance policies and procedures.”

No matter these procedures are, college students at Shawnee say it’s not almost sufficient.

Extra from the Kansas Metropolis Star:

It’s unclear how the varsity might have punished the white pupil, however college students on the protest claimed he acquired a suspension they felt was not a powerful sufficient punishment.

Littlejohn stated she’s pissed off, claiming college students weren’t provided any help or clarification after the battle. “There was no follow-up, no e-mail despatched, no announcement. It wasn’t acknowledged,” she stated.

College students who witnessed or heard in regards to the battle helped arrange Monday’s protest.

So, yeah, we’d like to be optimistic about race relations sooner or later, but it surely persistently seems that the outdated adage holds true: The extra issues change, the extra they keep the identical.
