South Africa’s First Black Woman Brewer Empowers A New Generation

The 41-year-old grasp brewer strives to introduce extra girls and ladies to the male-dominated business.

Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela is believed to be the primary Black lady in South Africa to personal a craft brewery. The 41-year-old grasp brewer strives to introduce extra girls and ladies to the male-dominated business. 

Nxusani-Mawela is the proprietor of Tolokazi Brewery, positioned simply exterior Johannesburg, the place she teaches youth the artwork of brewing. 

The 13 college students at Brewsters Academy maintain levels or diplomas in STEM fields, similar to chemical engineering, biotechnology, or analytical chemistry. At Brewsters Academy, college students may also earn an extra certification in brewing. 

 In line with an Oxford Economics report in “Beer’s World Financial Footprint,” South Africa’s beer business creates over 200,000 jobs and contributes about $5.2 billion to South Africa’s gross home product. Nxusani-Mawela says she needs to make sure that girls have a possibility to learn from the profitable business. 

“I needed to ensure that, being the primary Black feminine to personal a brewery in South Africa, I’m not the primary and the final,” she advised the Related Press. “Brewsters Academy, for me, is about remodeling the business … What I need to see is that in 5, ten years from now, that it ought to be a norm to have Black individuals within the business, it ought to be a norm to have females within the business.”

Twenty-four-year-old Lehlohonolo Makhethe, a Brewsters’ scholar, identified that girls as soon as dominated the beer brewing business in some components of Africa. 

The way it bought male-dominated, I don’t know,” the 24-year-old brewer stated. “I’d somewhat say we’re going again to our roots as girls to doing what we began.”

Nxusani-Mawela teaches varied kinds of brewing and strives to maintain conventional African beer-making alive for future generations. Her Wild African Soul beer is a collaboration with craft beer firm Soul Barrel Brewing, a mix of African Umqombothi beer —a creamy brew made out of maize and sorghum malt —blended with fruity notes. Wild African Soul Beer was the  2025 African Beer Cup winner.  

“Umqombothi is our African method, and everyone ought to know tips on how to make it, however we don’t,” she stated. “I consider that the beer kinds that we make must mirror having a component of our previous being introduced into the longer term,” Nxusani-Mawela stated.
