Sixteen folks have been killed in an assault in northcentral Nigeria, the place clashes between herders and farmers are frequent, the military stated Sunday.
The assault occurred round midnight Saturday within the village of Mushu within the Plateau State, Captain Oya James informed AFP.

“We have been sleeping when abruptly loud photographs rang out,” stated Markus Amorudu, a resident of the village.
“We have been scared as a result of we weren’t anticipating an assault. Individuals hid, however the assailants captured many people, some have been killed, others wounded,” he informed AFP.

The area is on the dividing line between Nigeria’s principally Muslim north and primarily Christian south and has for years struggled with ethnic and spiritual tensions.
It was not instantly clear what sparked the most recent assault and who was accountable.

Safety personnel have been deployed to stop any extra clashes within the space, the place tit-for-tat killings between herders, who’re most frequently Muslim, and farmers, who’re usually Christian, typically spiral into village raids by closely armed gangs.

State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the most recent assault as “barbaric, brutal and uncalled for” and vowed to convey the perpetrators to justice, his spokesman, Gyang Bere, informed reporters.
