State legislators are becoming a member of forces to handle the Black maternal mortality and reproductive well being crises in the USA. In recognition of Black Maternal Well being Week, going down from April 11 to April 17, members of the Reproductive Freedom Management Council (RFLC) will introduce and advocate for insurance policies aimed toward bettering Black maternal well being. These efforts are available direct response to actions by former President Donald Trump and his administration, which have threatened to undermine progress in reproductive healthcare and maternal outcomes for Black ladies.

Launched in 2018 by the State Innovation Alternate (SiX), the RFLC is the one nationwide community of state legislators devoted to advancing reproductive well being, rights, and justice. All through Black Maternal Well being Week, RFLC lawmakers, in partnership with the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, will highlight essential insurance policies, together with increasing and defending Medicaid, strengthening maternal mortality overview boards, opposing anti-abortion laws, and pushing for sustained funding in Black communities.

“Black ladies deserve to provide start with out worry, to obtain care with out bias, and to reside with out the burden of systemic neglect,” stated Rep. Felicia Robinson (FL-104) in a press launch. “Prioritizing Black maternal well being isn’t simply vital—it’s proper. Insurance policies ought to shield, uplift, and be sure that our voices and lives are valued in each well being care area.”

The time for motion is now.

Supportive insurance policies for Black maternal and reproductive well being are urgently wanted. Black ladies are 3 times extra more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues and face the next threat of creating reproductive well being points like cervical most cancers, in response to the Nationwide Black Ladies’s Reproductive Justice Agenda.

Whereas most personal insurance coverage suppliers supply protection for reproductive well being companies and abortion care, Black ladies stay 55% extra more likely to be uninsured in comparison with white ladies—additional deepening disparities in entry and outcomes.

Lately, actions taken by President Trump and his administration have raised severe considerations about the way forward for reproductive rights for Black ladies. Earlier this month, a number of maternal and youngster well being packages have been both eradicated or considerably scaled again as a part of an enormous layoff initiative by the Division of Well being and Human Providers (HHS), led by Well being Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In keeping with The Guardian, Kennedy introduced plans to chop 10,000 jobs as a part of a department-wide restructuring. Mixed with extra reductions made by Elon Musk’s unofficial “Division of Authorities Effectivity,” HHS stands to lose as much as 20,000 staff—almost 1 / 4 of its workforce. These cuts threaten the very packages which are essential to advancing Black maternal and reproductive well being.

The MOMNIBUS Invoice is the reply.

Pennsylvania Rep. La’Tasha D. Mayes—a vocal advocate of RFLC and the co-founder of the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Well being Caucus—says she is “deeply dedicated” to advancing progress in Black maternal well being. As a mom herself, Mayes understands the urgency of the disaster and is amongst a number of legislators championing the Pennsylvania MOMNIBUS invoice, a complete piece of laws, comprised of eight payments, aimed toward bettering maternal well being outcomes throughout the state.

In 2024, two provisions from the Momnibus invoice have been handed—HB 1608 which makes doula companies eligible for Medicaid reimbursement, protecting the interval from being pregnant to 1 yr postpartum. Moreover, Momnibus invoice HB 2127 was signed into regulation, which mandates that pregnant and postpartum people obtain screenings and sources for perinatal and postpartum temper and nervousness issues.

“As a state legislator and as a mom, I’m deeply dedicated to reversing the disturbing traits of Black maternal mortality and morbidity in our Commonwealth,” ” stated Mayes. “Our imaginative and prescient should embrace daring legislative motion like our Pennsylvania MOMNIBUS to make the lives of Black mothers and birthing folks matter.”

The ability of Mayes and lawmakers in Pennsylvania additionally impressed Delaware Rep, Rae C. Cousins, to deliver change to her state.

“As a mom, it has been extremely empowering to work alongside different ladies and moms in Virginia’s legislature to handle maternal well being disparities. Due to this robust coalition, we efficiently handed a MOMnibus bundle of payments and invested $6.7M to enhance maternal well being outcomes statewide,” she revealed in a press launch despatched to NewsOne.
