Rep. Kamlager-Dove celebrates 50 years of hip-hop on anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s death

U.S. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Calif., held a press convention this week to rejoice 50 years of hip-hop.

“Let’s honor the unimaginable motion and music and financial juggernaut that’s hip-hop,” Kamlager-Dove advised theGrio.

“That is about training. That is a few celebration of tradition, and that is concerning the continuation of a motion.”

The freshman congresswoman determined to acknowledge the fiftieth anniversary of hip-hop on the twenty seventh dying anniversary of rapper Tupac Shakur, who hailed from her state.

“I believe it’s necessary that we enable a day like this to rejoice Tupac Shakur as a result of over 20 years in the past, this may not have occurred,” stated Kamlager-Dove. “When hip-hop simply began, of us had been attempting to arrest hip-hop artists.”

Reflecting on the present state of music, she stated, “Now we’ve of us attempting to steal from our hip-hop artists. So, let’s rejoice the icons that created the motion.”

Kamlager-Dover stated that is additionally a time to “converse to the necessity to resolve [Tupac Shakur’s] case” and “deliver closure to a household and trade I believe remains to be coping with the after-effects of his homicide.”

Throughout Thursday’s press convention, the California lawmaker was joined by Reps. Nikema Williams, D-Ga., Robin Kelly, D-In poor health., Cori Bush, D-Mo., and Shakur’s sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur.

In July, Kamlager-Dove launched a decision to honor the fiftieth anniversary of hip-hop on Aug. 11, 2023, as theGrio beforehand reported.

She advised theGrio on the time, “It’s necessary now greater than ever to protect hip-hop as a result of we see Governor ‘De-Loopy’ [Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis] and others attempting to ban books, take them out of locations the place younger folks can be taught the significance of hip-hop.” 

She added the “time is now” to protect the artwork kind. “Hip-hop tells another story of oldsters who’ve felt marginalized and oftentimes, erased or forgotten,” stated the congresswoman.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., co-sponsored the decision.

In July, Bowman advised theGrio, “Hip-hop wants its personal Corridor of Fame and it wants its personal Library of Congress.” 

“It’s important to protect,” he stated. “Hip-Hop is my tradition. It’s the tradition that raised me. It’s the tradition that impressed me. It gave me data of self. It taught me politics and a lot of what my work in Congress is rooted in.”

Towards the conclusion of Thursday’s press convention, Kamlager-Dove shared a message to Republicans in Congress who’re in opposition of her efforts to acknowledge the fiftieth anniversary of hip-hop.

“Right here we’re coping with a bogus impeachment inquiry that’s about to begin” and a “authorities shutdown” as a substitute of “attempting to assist folks,” she advised theGrio.

“Hip-hop talks about how we prefer to neglect concerning the poor [and] the hypocrisy of the federal government. Solely seeking to save just a few and never addressing the wants of the various,” she added. “So why not rejoice the fiftieth anniversary of hip-hop?”
