Rep. Ayanna Pressley speaks out about the rising Black women’s unemployment rate: ‘None of this is by accident’

After the newest United States job studies confirmed the unemployment price amongst black girls is continuous to rise, Rep. Ayana Pressley is bringing consideration to the matter. 

On Tuesday, September 9, Pressley penned a letter to the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, highlighting the problem, its ongoing impression on Black girls and their households, and what the labor power is shedding, NBC Information reported. 

“When the remainder of the nation will get a chilly, Black of us get pneumonia,” the Massachusetts consultant instructed the outlet.

In July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that roughly 319,000 Black girls have misplaced their jobs since February, inflicting the unemployment price for Black girls to teeter between 5.8% and 6% over the previous few months. 

Pressley emphasised in her letter that Black girls aren’t solely main in school levels however are additionally the fastest-growing demographic of entrepreneurs, and so they “disproportionately function breadwinners for our households.”
