Famend TV host LeVar Burton, recognized for his roles in Studying Rainbow and Roots, was shocked by his part-white ancestry on the most recent episode of Discovering Your Roots.
The PBS family tree collection, hosted by Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., explored Burton’s household tree as he sought solutions about his background, rising up together with his two sisters raised by a single mom in Sacramento, California.
The revelation added a brand new dimension to Burton’s understanding of his ancestry, in accordance with Rolling Stone. Gates Jr. revealed that Burton’s maternal ancestry features a great-great-grandfather named James Henry Dixon, who was white. Dixon had an extramarital relationship with a Black lady, a former slave, ensuing within the beginning of Burton’s great-grandmother, Mary.
“Wow,” replied a surprised Burton upon studying the information, later including, “I’d have fought you 5 minutes in the past if you happen to had advised me that I had a white great-great-grandfather… What?! Kunta obtained white ancestry. What?! Come on now, Skip!”
When requested if he had ever thought he had a “white direct ancestor,” Burton expressed shock, laughing and exclaiming, “Noooooooo! No, I had no thought! So, granny was half-white?”
It was revealed that Burton’s great-great-grandfather, Dixon, born in 1847, had served as an adolescent within the North Carolina Accomplice Junior Reserves, a subset of the Accomplice Military that fought to defend slavery.
Burton stated the revelation sparked some inner battle in him …” however… oddly sufficient, I really feel a pathway opening up.”
He defined that there’s a want for open dialogue on the problem of 1’s id and heritage, particularly in a society marked by political, emotional, and racial polarization.
