Remembering Richard Smallwood: Service in Maryland

The celebration of life for legendary gospel artist Richard Smallwood will happen on Jan. 24 at First Baptist Church of Glenarden Worldwide in Higher Marlboro, Md. Although the service begins at midday, doorways will open at 9:30 a.m. 

Smallwood, 77, died from problems of kidney failure at a nursing facility in Sandy Spring, Md., on Dec. 30. An award-winning composer, pianist and choir director, Smallwood is most identified for gospel anthems like, “Whole Reward,” “Heart of My Pleasure,” and “I Love the Lord.” 

“We’re saddened to announce the passing of world-renowned artist, songwriter and musician, Richard Smallwood,” learn an announcement posted to Smallwood’s Fb web page on Dec. 30. “The household asks that you just respect our privateness throughout this tough time, whereas serving to to have a good time the legacy he leaves behind and the items he unselfishly shared with the world.” 

Within the wake of Smallwood’s dying, numerous religion leaders and musical artists shared tributes celebrating his lasting affect on gospel music, his position in shaping worship traditions and the religious inspiration his songs dropped at generations of listeners.

Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, referred to as Smallwood a musical genius and an enormous on the earth of gospel music. 

“He was an inspiration to all who encountered his music,” wrote Warnock on X, previously Twitter. “His songs obtained us via robust instances, darkish and tough days. No grave can silence his voice. The melodies linger and the religion lives on.” 

Chaka Khan additionally took to social media to explain Smallwood’s affect on her. 

“Richard Smallwood opened up my complete world of gospel music. His music didn’t simply encourage me, it reworked me. He’s my favourite pianist, and his brilliance, spirit and devotion to the music have formed generations, together with my very own journey,” mentioned Khan in a Fb submit on Dec. 30. “He will probably be drastically missed, and his legacy will proceed to dwell via each be aware and each soul he touched.
