Newark Mayor Ras Jua Baraka has entered the race for governorship of New Jersey.

Baraka is a three-term mayor of Newark, the most important metropolis within the state of New Jersey: he has ruled the town since 2014.

Baraka can be the son of the poet Amina Baraka and famed Black Arts Motion poet/playwright Amiri Baraka—he was raised within the metropolis and his household says they will hint their Newark roots again for greater than 80 years.

Baraka introduced his candidacy for governor on February 19 whereas delivering a Black Historical past Month speech that celebrated Divine 9 fraternity and sorority members. The mayor talked about honoring and remembering the aspirations of Black ancestors who, of their day, may solely pray for his or her youngsters to have materials comforts and dwell in a world the place they may garner respect.

“Your great-great-great-grandmother prayed for that home that you just dwell in, that automotive that you just drive. They prayed so that you’d now not be second-class or third-class, or beneath anyone’s toes,” he’s seen in a video telling the gang assembled in Trenton, New Jersey.

“…I thank my great-great-great grandmother within the dungeon of Elmina Citadel. …So, I’m grateful for my great-great-great-great-great grandmother as a result of she prayed for somewhat boy from Newark who grew up on Clinton Avenue and tenth Road and frolicked at Yusef Steak N’ Tackle 14th and Avon. Who gave me the chance to be on the Trenton Struggle Memorial Theater with Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman. My great-great-great grandmother prayed for the unlikely circumstance that this younger boy who took over the administration at Howard College, would take over the town and turn into the mayor after working 16 years and never profitable something.

“My great-great-great grandmother, on her knees, along with her eyes closed, huddled up with each other, not figuring out what tomorrow appeared like, stated, ‘They’re not going to carry you down, they’re not going to carry you again. They’re not going to steal your future. They’re not going to maintain your tomorrows. You, little Black boy, from Newark, New Jersey—only a child, only a child from Newark with your whole weak spot and feebleness and humanity. You can also stand right here on the Trenton Struggle Memorial and say, ‘I’m going to be the governor of New Jersey!’”

Baraka enters an already crowded race to fill the soon-to-be-vacated seat of term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy. Murphy is a two-term governor who narrowly gained re-election in 2021, regardless that New Jersey is a closely Democratic Celebration-leaning state.

The opposite candidates at the moment seeking to turn into governor within the November 4, 2025, common election embody Jersey Metropolis Mayor Steve Fulop, who’s a Democrat; Stephen Sweeney, who can be a Democrat and who served as president of the New Jersey Senate; and State Senator Jon Bramnick who’s working on the Republican Celebration ticket.

The web site for the Newark mayor lauds his accomplishments: “Mayor Baraka’s progressive strategy to governing has … lowered crime to its lowest ranges in 5 many years, addressed affordability whereas sustaining regular progress, lowered unemployment, returned native management of colleges after greater than twenty years, and changed all 23,000 identified lead service traces in lower than three years for free of charge to residents, Baraka has defied expectations since taking workplace in 2014.”

If Ras Baraka is elected governor of New Jersey, he can be the state’s first-ever Black governor.
