The peaceable protests and occasions had been held alongside streets, courthouses, and different public areas in cities all through the U.S., together with cities focused by Trump ICE raids like Atlanta and St. Louis, Missouri. Organized by a coalition of nonprofits like Public Citizen, co-president Lisa Gilbert stated, given the state of the political local weather, showcasing the grievances of the nation on a nationwide day of motion is important. “We’re navigating some of the terrifying moments in our nation’s historical past,” Gilbert stated.

Lewis, who was the youngest and final survivor of the Large Six civil rights activists — a bunch led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr — handed away in 2020 after a battle with pancreatic most cancers. Efforts from King and Lewis led to then-President Lyndon Johnson urgent Congress to move the Voting Rights Act in 1965, simply days after Lewis and 600 protesters had been overwhelmed by police whereas crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, a day now often called Bloody Sunday.

Earlier than his passing, Lewis was in a position to commemorate the 1965 voting rights marches. “Get in good hassle, essential hassle, and redeem the soul of America,” Lewis stated.

5 years in the past at present, the nice civil rights activist and consultant, John Lewis handed away. Immediately, allow us to honor and bear in mind him. Allow us to recommit to getting in “good hassle.” To standing up for what is correct. For talking out towards hate. To combating for what issues. To… pic.twitter.com/dUa7Difr6f

The “Good Hassle Lives On” protests are added to the rising protests throughout the nation amid Trump’s insurance policies. In early July 2025, federal regulation enforcement and protestors engaged in a tense standoff attributable to a chaotic raid and arrests of immigrants on two Southern California marijuana farms, leading to one farmworker dying after falling from a greenhouse roof, in accordance with The Related Press.

As demonstrators labeled Trump as a dictator and wannabe king for honoring his birthday with a army parade, “No Kings” demonstrations launched protests with tens of millions of individuals marching in cities like New York and Charlotte. Hundreds of individuals took over the streets of Los Angeles in early June 2025 after Trump despatched the Nationwide Guard towards them for taking a stance towards unlawful deportations.

Members of Congress like Rep. Raphael Warnock took to social media to recollect their legendary colleague, saying he hoped Lewis’s reminiscence prompts everybody to “proceed moving into #GoodTrouble.”
