Pretoria High Court orders former president Edgar Lungu’s burial in Zambia

On 8 August 2025, the Pretoria Excessive Court docket ordered the repatriation of Edgar Lungu’s stays to Embassy Park, Lusaka, the official website for Zambian heads of state. Gauteng Deputy Choose President Aubrey Ledwaba delivered the judgment, siding with the Zambian authorities.

In June 2025, medical doctors handled Edgar Lungu in Pretoria for an undisclosed sickness when he died; he had beforehand undergone therapy for achalasia.

FAMILY’S OPPOSITION AND LEGAL ARGUMENTS

Lungu’s household opposed repatriation, citing his alleged want for a non-public burial in South Africa. Esther Lungu, his widow, said in court docket that he wished President Hichilema excluded from the funeral.

The household’s lawyer, Makebi Zulu, argued that the federal government’s claims have been rumour and lacked proof. The court docket dismissed these arguments, citing nationwide curiosity and protocol.

GOVERNMENT’S POSITION ON NATIONAL DIGNITY

Legal professional Common Mulilo Kabesha argued that the burial of former presidents is a state matter. He referenced the precedent set by President Kenneth Kaunda’s burial at Embassy Park.

FINAL ARRANGEMENTS AND PUBLIC REACTION

The latest court docket ruling solely grants the Zambian authorities the proper to a state funeral and burial in Lusaka. Moreover, the ruling ends a two-month dispute that drew regional consideration and political debate.

Authorities sources confirmed preparations are underway, although no burial date has been introduced. The ruling has sparked combined reactions, with some praising nationwide unity and others criticising political interference.
