PRESS ROOM: USPS celebrates judiciary trailblazer Constance Baker Motley with 47th Black Heritage Stamp

(Black PR Wire) — What: The forty seventh stamp within the Black Heritage sequence honors Constance Baker Motley (1921-2005), civil rights pioneer and the primary African American girl to argue a case earlier than the U.S. Supreme Courtroom and the primary to function a federal choose.

Background: Constance Baker Motley began her profession in 1945 when she started working for the long run U.S. Supreme Courtroom Justice Thurgood Marshall on the Nationwide Affiliation for the Development of Coloured Folks (NAACP) Authorized Protection and Instructional Fund.

From 1945 to 1965, Motley labored on about 60 circumstances that reached the Supreme Courtroom. She gained 9 of the ten circumstances she argued earlier than the Courtroom.

In 1966, Motley was nominated by President Lyndon B. Johnson to a seat on the U.S. District Courtroom for the Southern District of New York — the biggest and busiest federal trial courtroom within the nation. She rose to chief choose in 1982 and senior choose in 1986.

The stamp incorporates a portrait of Motley by artist Charly Palmer, primarily based on an Related Press {photograph}. Rendered in acrylic on canvas work, the portrait shows parts of Palmer’s signature model. The stenciled round shapes across the head recommend royalty, and the heavy brushstrokes and scratches present added textures. Stenciled curlicues embellish the decrease background and proceed onto Motley’s black gown. Her colourful corsage and a brooch additional enliven the picture.
