A pinnacle work by Vladimir Tretchikoff, the much-loved Russian-born Cape City painter whose vivid portraiture and canny advertising methods prefigured Pop artwork, leads Strauss & Co’s September Public sale Week from 16-18 September 2024.
Painted circa 1954-56, Balinese Woman (estimate R5-7 million) derives from Tretchikoff’s basic interval, when he originated such iconic works as Chinese language Woman (1952) and Girl from Orient (1955).
“Balinese Woman is a commanding portrait of a really assured and chic younger lady rendered with the Aristocracy and beauty by an artist on the top of his powers,” says Bina Genovese, Managing Govt, Strauss & Co.
“Tretchikoff used a bluish-green color palette to depict his youthful topic’s pores and skin tone, a method he reserved for less than his most necessary portraits. It’s a privilege to be dealing with this masterwork within the artist’s adopted hometown, Cape City, the place he settled in 1946, dwelling a full and productive life.”
Balinese Woman attracts strongly from Vladimir Tretchikoff’s first-hand information of Asia.
After the 1917 Russian Revolution, the artist lived in China, Singapore and Indonesia for numerous intervals.
Andrew Lamprecht, Curator of Historic Work and Sculpture on the Iziko South African Nationwide Gallery and a famous Tretchikoff professional, says of Balinese Woman: “Tretchikoff is at pains to current his sitter in a dignified pose, proudly bearing the costume and jewelry of her residence nation and in all, suffused by the sweetness and sparkle of glamour. That is at a time when such topics had been usually the topic of gross caricature and misrepresentation.”
Balinese Woman will probably be introduced in Strauss & Co’s marquee Night Sale of Fashionable andContemporary Arton Tuesday, 17 September 2024 at 19:00.
Additionally up on the market is Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Chrysanthemums in an Oriental Vase (estimate R800 000 – R1.2 million), a vertiginous flower composition owned by artwork collectors Mark and Elizabeth Harding from Kimberley.
Rendered within the artist’s distinctive blue-green palette, Harding acquired this work in 1969 from a well known artwork seller in Durban, Payne Bros.
It initiated a detailed relationship with the artist that enabled the Hardings to handpick unique works from the artist’s studio in 1973.
Curiosity in Tretchikoff’s work has not waned after his dying in 2006, at age 92.
Posthumous biographies and a 2011 museum exhibition in Cape City have contributed to sturdy standing at market.
Including additional lustre to his standing, Chinese language Woman, a virtually contemporaneous work to Balinese Woman, is on public show at Delaire Graff Property, close to Stellenbosch.
Collector demand for Tretchikoff has seen sturdy costs achieved for portraits and flower research from his peak interval of the late Forties and Nineteen Fifties.
In 2023, Strauss & Co bought Nonetheless Life with Magnolias in a Vase, dated 1952, for R4.1 million.
Dated 1956 Tretchikoff’s portrait Zulu Maiden achieved R3.2 million at a 2015 sale.
Strauss & Co has efficiently supplied 76 works by Tretchikoff since 2009, reaching a mixed worth of R51 million for sellers from 83% heaps bought.
