Searching for distinctive stones, I discovered the lifeless otter
rotting by the tideline, and carried all day the scent of this savage
valediction. That headlong excessive sound the oystercatcher makes
got here echoing by the rocky cove
the place a cormorant was feeding and submarining within the bay
and a heron rose off a boulder the place he’d been invisible,
drifted a little bit, stood once more—a hieroglyph
or simply longevity reflecting on itself
between the sky clouding over and the evenly ruffled water.
This was the morning after your dream of dying, of being held
and informed it did not matter. A butterfly went jinking over
the wave-silky stones, and the place I turned
to go up the highway once more, a pair in a blue camper sat
smoking their cigarettes over their breakfast espresso (blue
scent of smoke, the thick darkish odor of recent espresso)
and speaking in quiet voices, first one then the opposite answering,
their radio telling the each day information behind them. It was heat.
All appeared at peace. I may really feel the solar coming off the water.
