OKC Black Lives Matter’s Executive Director Indicted for Fraud

Tashella Sheri Amore Dickerson allegedly diverted hundreds of thousands of {dollars} in charitable funds for private use.

The manager director of the Oklahoma Metropolis chapter of Black Lives Matter was indicted final week on federal fraud and money-laundering expenses.

Tashella Sheri Amore Dickerson, 52, allegedly diverted hundreds of thousands of {dollars} in charitable funds for private use, in keeping with the U.S. Lawyer’s workplace.  A federal grand jury returned an indictment on Dec. 3, charging Dickerson with 20 counts of wire fraud and 5 counts of cash laundering. 

Prosecutors allege Dickerson, who has led Black Lives Matter OKC since at the least 2016, raised greater than $5.6 million in donations. The donations had been largely meant to submit bail for people arrested throughout Black Lives Matter protests following the 2020 killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

The indictment states Dickerson deposited at the least $3.15 million in returned bail checks into her private accounts after which used the cash for private bills, together with journeys to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, retail buying, and at the least $50,000 in meals and grocery deliveries.

Moreover, the indictment states Dickerson bought a private car and 6 Oklahoma Metropolis properties both in her identify or managed by an organization she owned.

Dickerson can also be accused of submitting false annual experiences to the Alliance for International Justice, the Arizona-based fiscal sponsor by which Black Lives Matter OKC accepted donations. stating that the funds had been used just for tax-exempt functions. 

If convicted, Dickerson faces as much as 20 years in federal jail for every wire-fraud depend and as much as 10 years for every money-laundering depend, prosecutors mentioned. 

Past Dickerson’s particular person crimes, the U.S. Division of Justice has been investigating whether or not leaders related to Black Lives Matter defrauded donors. The division is accusing the group of swindling tens of hundreds of thousands of {dollars} raised through the protests in opposition to police brutality in 2020.

There was no indication that Dickerson’s indictment is straight linked to the general investigation.
