Ohio Is the New Texas — And That Should Scare Us All

Texas has at all times been framed as “completely different.” Huge, brash, and daring in its politics. However right here’s the reality: Texas wasn’t simply being Texas. It was testing a political working system. From gerrymandering maps that appear to be spilled ink, to e-book bans, to voter suppression dressed up as “integrity,” Texas turned the beta web site for authoritarian democracy.

And now? Ohio is the improve.

If Texas was iOS 1.0, Ohio is iOS 2.0. And if we let Venture 2025 take root, we’ll be staring down the complete working system set up — a redesigned America that locks tens of millions of us out of energy completely.

Maps Are Code

Give it some thought: redistricting is political UX design. The strains on a map aren’t impartial; they’re code that determines how we expertise energy. The map decides who will get a voice and who will get muted. Who wins earlier than the primary vote is even forged.

In Texas, the maps had been written to make sure a shrinking white minority may preserve everlasting majority management. In Ohio, the “improve” is cleaner, sharper, extra environment friendly. The state legislature is popping maps into an exclusionary firewall — one which blocks out Black communities, younger voters, and cities driving the longer term financial system.

This isn’t dysfunction. It’s design.

Authoritarianism Wants Beta Testing

Each system rollout begins someplace. Tech firms check in managed environments earlier than scaling. Political authoritarians do the identical.

Texas was the prototype: chaotic, messy, and deeply dangerous.

Ohio is the franchise rollout: much less apparent, however extra deadly, as a result of it seems to be “regular” to outsiders.

Venture 2025 is the nationwide set up: the second the working system absolutely replaces democracy’s messy however open-source code with one thing smooth, managed, and unremovable.

Authoritarianism doesn’t march in boots anymore; it creeps in by means of person agreements. By the point you notice what you’ve signed, the system has already up to date in a single day.

Why Ohio Issues Now

Ohio sits on the intersection of outdated trade and new chance. Ohio is the one state constitutionally required to redraw congressional maps in 2025 — regardless of voters siding with having honest maps in 2015 and 2018. Our majority-minority cities surrounded by suburbs and rural cities inform two completely different tales of America. It’s a spot the place the longer term can nonetheless be constructed — or rigged out of attain.

What occurs in Ohio gained’t keep in Ohio. Identical to Texas exported its blueprint, Ohio will export its maps, its legal guidelines, and its ways.

California because the Open-Supply Counterweight

However right here’s the factor: techniques don’t simply evolve in a single path. If Texas and Ohio are exhibiting us the closed-source authoritarian mannequin, California is experimenting with an open-source democracy.

Governor Gavin Newsom has been stress-testing a distinct OS:

Increasing rights: enshrining abortion entry and reproductive rights within the state structure.

Defending the vote: constructing infrastructure to safeguard entry whereas different states dismantle it.

Creating sanctuary: making California a haven the place rights underneath assault elsewhere can nonetheless be defended and modeled.

That is greater than “blue state coverage.” It’s a counter-code — a system that resists authoritarian installs by exhibiting the nation what inclusive design seems to be like in observe.

Texas and Ohio are operating closed techniques constructed to lock folks out. California is experimenting with open-source democracy designed to carry folks in. The true struggle is not only left vs. proper; it’s which working system America will improve to.

Combating Again Means Rewriting the Code

The excellent news? Programs could be hacked. Firewalls could be damaged. Maps could be challenged. Nevertheless it takes greater than taking part in protection.

We’ve to:

Expose the design — name redistricting what it truly is: political coding for minority rule.

Construct new infrastructure — not simply react to maps, however design new techniques of neighborhood energy that may’t be erased with a pen stroke.

Hyperlink arms throughout states — what begins in Texas, scales in Ohio, and spreads in all places. Our resistance has to scale, too.

As a result of if we don’t, the subsequent time the system updates, we might discover ourselves locked out for good.

Right here’s the actual headline: Ohio isn’t a swing state. It’s a sign state. A sign of what’s to come back if we don’t rewrite the code — and a sign that California’s counter-code may simply be the firewall we’d like.

Ashley Bryant Bailey is an Ohio native and a Senior Advisor to Greater Heights for America, the nation’s main group targeted on Black ladies’s political energy. A seasoned political strategist and former Obama/Biden marketing campaign staffer, she is presently operating for Ohio Statehouse District 26.
