NYC will pay $17.5 million to Black man who was wrongly convicted of 1996 murders

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Metropolis pays $17.5 million to a Black man who spent 24 years in jail for a double murder he didn’t commit, metropolis officers stated Thursday.

The settlement within the case of George Bell, certainly one of three males convicted for the 1996 killing of a Queens check-cashing retailer proprietor and an off-duty police officer, was first reported by The New York Instances.

However the males have been convicted in separate trials and sentenced to between 50 years and life in jail.

Bell’s legal professional, Richard Emery, stated Thursday, “Recognition from this settlement that George’s torture was unimaginably extreme and horrifying vindicates him and his endless quest for justice.”

Emery stated the cope with town comes after Bell reached a $4.4 million settlement with the state.

Bell’s $17.5 million settlement with New York Metropolis possible gained’t be the final payout within the case. Johnson and Bolt have circumstances pending.
