Organizers of the Feb. 28 “No Extra Crumbs” rally known as on state and metropolis officers to guard residents from meals help cuts as stricter SNAP enforcement resumed in New York on March 1.

“That is primary human life that we’re making an attempt to maintain, to maintain,” stated Diana Ramos, a rally participant, as she talked about what she and others known as widening threats to the social security web. “We don’t deserve crumbs — we deserve a full meal.”

Federal authorities Supplemental Diet Help Program (SNAP) advantages recipients designated as ABAWD (able-bodied adults with out dependents) face a time restrict. Those that don’t meet month-to-month work or coaching necessities might have their advantages reduce off beginning March 1, 2026.

“As soon as you utilize up the three months and you aren’t assembly the ABAWD work guidelines, you’ll lose your SNAP advantages,” the state Workplace of Momentary and Incapacity Help (OTDA) explains. In response to OTDA, New York’s present three-year interval started Oct. 1, 2023, and can finish on Sept. 30, 2026. These unable to supply documentation of eligible hours might attain this cutoff sooner.

New York Metropolis’s Human Sources Administration (HRA) had been making ready for this shift. HRA acknowledged that it was required to implement ABAWD eligibility necessities starting Nov. 1, 2025, and that recognized people “will probably be required to conform” starting March 1, 2026. The company stated recipients topic to the rule ought to anticipate notices, and if they don’t seem to be already assembly the requirement, appointments might be made to attach them with accepted work actions.

For Ramos and fellow organizers, the coverage shift is greater than only a paperwork challenge — they stated it’s a starvation challenge, one which hits working-class communities and older adults particularly laborious. “I don’t need to ever hear a couple of little one going to highschool hungry, or an aged individual having to resolve between meals and medicine, or hire and electrical energy,” Ramos stated. “I need that little one thriving… I need that aged individual… to have the ability to take pleasure in retirement.”

The Feb. 28 occasion started with a midday neighborhood meetup at Harlem Hospital on Malcolm X Blvd at one hundred and thirty fifth Road, adopted by a 12:30 p.m. rally. Contributors then marched down Malcolm X, delivering name and response chants like “Healthcare not warfare! Healthcare not warfare!” and “What do we wish? Tax the Wealthy! What do we wish? Tax the Wealthy! What do we wish? Tax the Wealthy! Tax who? Tax the Wealthy! Tax who? Tax the Wealthy!” earlier than coming collectively for a second rally in entrance of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Workplace Constructing on one hundred and twenty fifth Road.

The rally was organized by the Security Web Activists/Security Web Mission on the City Justice Middle, together with a coalition that included Radical Elders, NY-11 Well being Coalition, Make the Street, Rise and Resist, Physicians for a Nationwide Well being Program NY Metro, Housing Works, and Manhattan Neighborhood Board 10, in accordance with the organizing supplies.

“It begins at residence,” stated Ramos, a Security Web activist. She framed the “No Extra Crumbs” rally as a part of an effort to rebuild the sort of mass, cross-neighborhood mobilization that formed earlier welfare rights fights. “Actions like civil rights actions… didn’t simply grow to be nationwide… It began in a single small house after which it progressed ahead.”

Of their public name, organizers argued that the federal authorities is “threatening” and “attacking” safety-net packages, and that native leaders want to reply with “daring plans” to guard individuals’s entry to meals, housing, and healthcare. They hyperlink SNAP to a bigger set of struggles over Medicaid and housing packages.

Organizers stated the coalition’s instant demand was that state and metropolis leaders counter the March enforcement shift with expanded assist, as a substitute of tighter restrictions. The longer-term purpose is to deliver “No Extra Crumbs” rallies to each New York Metropolis borough and to construct a broader base for securing the security web.

“We wish all of the boroughs to return collectively and say, ‘Hey, that is what must occur,’” Ramos stated.
