Bobby Henry, the writer of the Westside Gazette in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., gained the election as chair of the Nationwide Newspaper Publishers Affiliation (NNPA) through the group’s 2023 conference in Nashville, Tenn.
The NNPA is the commerce affiliation of greater than 200 African American-owned newspapers and media firms in the US.
Dr. Frances Draper, writer of The Afro-American Newspaper in Baltimore and Washington, will function first vice chair, whereas Jackie Hampton, writer of The Mississippi Hyperlink, earned election as second Vice Chair. Fran Farrer, the writer of The County Information in Charlotte, N.C., was elected Secretary, and Cheryl Smith, writer of The Texas Metro Information and CEO of IMessenger Media, will function Treasurer.
Denise Rolark Barnes, writer of The Washington Informer, and Walter L. White of The Cincinnati Herald will function at-large board members. Henry, whose Westside Gazette has been revealed constantly since 1971 when his father, Levi, began the newspaper, takes over for Houston Ahead Occasions Writer Karen Carter Richards who served as chair for the previous 4 years.
Richards will be a part of Brenda Andrews of The New Journal and Information in Norfolk, Va., Kenneth Miller of Inglewood As we speak in Calif., Rod Doss of the New Pittsburgh Courier, Carl Anderson of The New Tri-State Defender in Memphis, Tenn. and Sonny Messiah-Jiles of the Defender Community in Houston, as members of the NNPA Fund Board, the nonprofit division of the NNPA.
Levi Henry was in attendance on the NNPA’s Legacy Awards Gala when Bobby Henry was introduced as the brand new chair, bringing the elder to tears. Bobby Henry demanded that the NNPA proceed to work collectively and to make sure that the Black Press stays the trusted voice of the African American neighborhood. He waxed poetic about his new function and what he expects going ahead.
“It isn’t at all times a pleasurable chore to serve and to be a servant,” Henry proclaimed in getting ready to guide the Black Press of America.
“What seems to be a joyful second of basking in bliss shortly fades away quicker than a snowflake over an open campfire. Be that as it could, I’m honored to be within the enterprise of ‘pleading our personal trigger’ as ‘Troopers With out Swords,’” he mentioned, referencing the basic 1999 PBS documentary on Black Press.
Henry mentioned the NNPA’s new govt board would “proceed to be a preeminent instance of the Black Press of America” no matter “how ‘stony the highway we trod.’”
