NNPA highlights giants of Black Press at Metropolitan AME Church

Whereas storms and even tornadoes threatened the Larger Washington Space on March 16, a spirit of peace reigned contained in the sanctuary of Metropolitan AME Church throughout a particular worship service. 

The pastor, the Rev. William H. Lamar IV,  his congregation and a bunch of tourists gathered on the second Sunday of Lent to look at Black Press Sunday and have fun the ministries of journalists, photographers, editors, publishers and all those that assist the establishment survive and thrive.

Whereas the service represented a collaborative effort between the Washington Affiliation of Black Journalists and the AFRO -American Newspapers, it additionally saluted the efforts of Denise Rolark Barnes, writer of The Washington Informer, whose publication marks its sixtieth 12 months of service to the D.C. group this 12 months. 

“I need to thank Pastor Lamar who graciously invited us to worship with him and this congregation at present 

and to have fun the religion, freedom and arduous work of the Black Press,” Rolark Barnes mentioned. “To the journalists, editors and publishers, your work is a ministry, and you’re the scribes of our occasions who be sure that our fact is informed, our struggles are documented, and our victories are celebrated.”

“We stand on the shoulders of giants like Frederick Douglass, who worshiped on this church and who based and edited the anti-slavery newspaper, ‘The North Star’ (Dec. 3, 1847, Rochester, New York),” she mentioned. “Douglass laid the muse for Black journalism as a software of liberation. Now, almost two centuries after the founding of the Black Press, we stay steadfast in our calls for for justice. 

“As for the publishers of ‘Freedom’s Journal,’ its founders included a Presbyterian minister (Samuel Cornish) and a journalist (John Russwurm) who understood that info is energy, and that fact is sacred. Journalism just isn’t a occupation, it’s a goal,” concluded Rolark Barnes, who then introduced to Rev. Lamar her private copy of “Prayer and Pen: The Prayers and Legacy of Carl Murphy, Writer of the AFRO-American Newspapers (1922-1967),” written by her good friend and colleague, the present writer of The AFRO and Murphy’s granddaughter, Rev. Frances Murphy Draper.

The morning speaker for the occasion was a member of the laity, Ravi Perry, a celebrated creator and professor of political science at Howard College spoke through the service. 

The theme of his sermon, “As a result of God Anointed Me,” centered on his perception that when one is anointed by God, it serves as “an invite to hitch God within the battle and to simply accept the decision towards lively participation in God’s revolution, proper right here and proper now.”
