Nigeria evacuates 300 citizens from Israel after pilgrimage

Nigeria has airlifted greater than 300 of its residents again residence after they fled to Jordan from Israel, the place they had been on a Christian pilgrimage, the Lagos state authorities mentioned Tuesday 10 October 2023.

“I’m blissful to announce that we’ve got efficiently airlifted and returned all 300 and ten… residents who went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Israel.” Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu mentioned on X, previously Twitter.

The group was travelling from Bethlehem to Nazareth after they heard information of the assault within the south of Israel, mentioned Bukola Adeleke, a particular adviser on Christian affairs for Lagos and one of many group leaders.

“We had been afraid, and everyone needed to return to Nigeria; no person desires to die,” he advised AFP after the group arrived early Tuesday.

With the conflict erupting, the group and the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims’ Fee organised for them to journey by street to Jordan and take a chartered flight to Lagos.

Households waited for his or her family members on the airport

“Their households had been ready for them on the airport… They waited till they noticed their individuals,” Adeleke mentioned. The group had been a part of a twice-a-year pilgrimage to non secular websites organised by the Lagos state authorities.

Africa’s most populous nation is nearly equally cut up between a predominantly Muslim north and a principally Christian south, and pilgrims journey abroad from each faiths.
