New York City plans to wipe out $2 billion in medical debt for 500,000 residents

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Metropolis intends to wipe out greater than $2 billion in medical debt for as much as 500,000 residents, tackling a prime trigger of private chapter, Mayor Eric Adams introduced Monday.

The town is working with RIP Medical Debt, a nonprofit that buys medical debt in bulk from hospitals and debt collectors for pennies on the greenback. The group targets the debt of individuals with low incomes or monetary hardships after which forgives the quantities.

Underneath this system, the town will spend $18 million over three years.

“For middle- and working-class New Yorkers, medical payments will be financially devastating,” Adams stated as he introduced the plan. “Working-class households usually have to decide on between paying their medical payments or a few of the fundamental necessities that they should undergo life.”

The mayor stated medical debt is the No. 1 reason behind chapter in the US, disproportionately burdening low-income households and folks with insufficient insurance coverage. He referred to as the debt aid program the most important municipal initiative of its variety within the nation, although RIP Medical Debt has labored with different municipalities.

RIP Medical Debt president and CEO Allison Sesso stated there will likely be no utility course of for this system. Aid recipients will likely be notified that their debt has been purchased by a 3rd get together and erased.

Although New York Metropolis is dealing with monetary strains, Adams stated the $18 million dedication over three years is a superb funding for the town.

“If you’ll be able to … save $2 billion in debt, that $2 billion trickles right down to these households, who usually are not going to fall into our security internet,” he stated. “They’re not going to fall into our homeless system.”
