New Mural Vandalized At TEP Center Days After Unveiling

Inside days of its unveiling, the mural was vandalized with black spray paint on two consecutive nights, starting March 3.

In a disturbing act of vandalism, the New Orleans Police Division (NOPD) is on the hunt for the person or people chargeable for a newly painted mural that was vandalized on the Tate, Etienne, Prevost Middle (TEP) within the Decrease ninth Ward.

The vandalization occurred over two nights with what seems to be the identical individual behind each incidents, in response to WDSU Information.

Established in 2021, the TEP Middle holds a big legacy, because it was based by three of the 4 girls who courageously desegregated faculties in New Orleans as younger women. As a part of the hassle, famend artist Brandon “B-Mike” Odums and youth from his nonprofit Everlasting Seeds have been commissioned to color a mural depicting the three girls of their youth and maturity. However inside days of its unveiling, the mural was vandalized with black spray paint on two consecutive nights, starting March 3.

Dr. Leona Tate, one of many legendary “New Orleans 4,” expressed her dismay. “Why somebody thought to jot down throughout it already, I don’t know. It sends me the sign that both racism remains to be alive or somebody has not been educated on what we do right here.” She added, “These have been kids who painted this. It’s heartbreaking to them.”

Nevertheless, she and her colleagues stay undeterred. “It’s fixable,” Tate mentioned in regards to the vandalized mural. “I’m praying it doesn’t occur once more.”

On Feb. 26, the TEP Middle took to Instagram and welcomed the NOLA neighborhood to cease by and go to the brand new exhibit. “Yesterday was nothing in need of superb!” it captioned a video of the mural and unveiling ceremony. The middle expressed its gratitude to the artists for the “superb exhibit, collaboration, and…astonishing mural!” The caption continued, “Please make sure you cease by and see this excellent mural in individual! The TEP Middle is open!”

“TEP Middle is right here to coach audiences in regards to the desegregation of public faculties throughout New Orleans,” Tate defined to WDSU Information. In 1960, on the tender age of 6, Tate, Tessie Prevost, and Gail Etienne braved racism and abuse to attend McDonogh 19, whereas Ruby Bridges concurrently built-in William Frantz Elementary.

Remarkably, a long time later, Tate, Prevost, and Etienne now personal the very faculty they helped desegregate.

By the top of final week, B-Mike and the Everlasting Seeds youth had restored the mural to its unique splendor.
