New Jersey to require free period products in schools for grades 6 through 12

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey would require faculty districts to supply free menstrual merchandise for grades six by 12 underneath a brand new regulation Gov. Phil Murphy signed Wednesday.

Murphy, a Democrat, mentioned in an announcement that the measure is geared toward selling fairness “at each stage” within the state.

“When college students can’t entry the menstrual merchandise they want for his or her reproductive well being, the potential stress and stigma too usually distracts them from their courses or forces them to skip faculty totally,” he mentioned.

Underneath the invoice, faculty districts are required to make sure that college students in faculties with college students from grade six by 12 have entry to free menstrual merchandise in not less than half of the feminine and gender-neutral bogs.

The state will bear any prices incurred by faculties underneath the laws. The legislature’s nonpartisan Workplace of Legislative Companies estimated the requirement will price between $1.8 million and $3.5 million for the primary full faculty yr and from $1.4 million to $2.9 million in subsequent years. The price is a fraction of the state’s $54.3 billion finances.

The requirement will have an effect on about 1,400 faculties. Whole enrollment of feminine college students in grades six by 12 in these faculties approximated 354,497, in keeping with the Legislature.

New Jersey joins not less than 10 different states and the District of Columbia which have established or expanded necessities without cost menstrual merchandise in faculties since 2010, in keeping with the Nationwide Convention of State Legislatures.
