National Newspaper Publishers Association holds 2023 National Leadership Awards

The Nationwide Newspaper Publishers Affiliation (NNPA), a commerce affiliation of greater than 200 African American-owned newspapers throughout the U.S, hosted the 2023 Nationwide Management Awards on Sept. 17 in Washington, D.C. The group, also called the Black Press of America, held the occasion to honor change-making leaders who’ve proven unwavering assist for the Black Press.

The NNPA finally awarded Steven Horsford (D-NV), chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and U.S. consultant from Nevada’s fourth district, Niesha Foster, vp of product entry, international well being and social influence at Pfizer, Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), Shontel Brown (D-Ohio), Jessie Woolley-Wilson, president and CEO of DreamBox Studying and broadly famend legal professional Benjamin Crump.

Opening the occasion, Lambert commented on the Black Press of America’s 196-year-long run, noting that the group will attain their bicentennial anniversary in 4 years.

Henry then spoke to the group, welcoming attendees to the event.

“Because the chairman of the Nationwide Newspaper Publishers Affiliation, the NNPA, the Black Press of America, and on behalf of our over 240 publishers and President Dr. Benjamin Chavis, our workers, we lengthen our warmest congratulations to you, the distinguished awardees of the NNPA Nationwide Management Awards,” mentioned Henry.

Lambert then invited NNPA president and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr, to the stage. Chavis proceeded to passionately acknowledge the NNPA’s publishers. “We thank God for the Black Press of America,” he mentioned. “We thank God for Black America. We thank God for America–even in its imperfections. Even in its maintain on racial disparity and racial discrimination, America remains to be gonna be a greater America due to Black America.”

To have fun Black excellence, Lambert welcomed activist Reverend Mark Thompson to talk.

Thompson then acknowledged notable people within the viewers, together with Tyler Huntley, quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, newly elected Harlem metropolis council member and member of the Exonerated 5 Dr. Yusef Salaam, Greg Jackson, just lately appointed deputy director of the White Home Workplace of Gun Violence Prevention, Jaime Harrison, chair of the Democratic Nationwide Committee and Demetria Mccain, principal deputy assistant secretary for honest housing and equal alternative on the U.S. Division of Housing and City Improvement.

Thompson offered the evening’s first Nationwide Management Award to Shontel Brown.

“My constituents have a really clear commonplace for service and expectation that I shall be there for them every day,” Brown mentioned in her acceptance speech. “That’s what evokes me to maintain combating for financial justice and alternative for Black communities and to maintain combating for civil rights, voting rights and ladies’s rights…Black newspapers and media have been instrumental in advancing justice, equity and fairness on this nation.”

Horsford then obtained his award.

“At a time when our democracy is underneath assault, we additionally know that the press and the Black press is underneath assault,” he mentioned. “That’s the reason we now have to make each effort to assist you, to fund you…we perceive that is a vital a part of your success and your sustainability.”
