Morgan States Makes History At Venice Architecture Biennale

Morgan State College boosts its international affect.

Morgan State College grew to become the primary HBCU to current a solo pavilion on the 2025 Venice Structure Biennale, the distinguished occasion showcasing international architectural works with its ReCall & Response set up. 

Impressed by West African traditions, the ReCall & Response pavilion was created by Coleman A. Jordan, an assistant professor of structure. The pavilion explores the idea of the speaking drum, a logo of cultural expression.

“The pavilion is a sonic vessel—an structure that remembers,”  Jordan stated in an announcement. “Via rhythm, kind, and collaboration, we bridge centuries of cultural disjunctions and reclaim area for Black expression and ancestral knowledge. This exhibit is a testomony to what’s potential when design serves historical past, therapeutic, and neighborhood.” 

The pavilion, constructed with sustainably sourced timber, was executed by college students and alumni from Morgan State College, Tuskegee College, and Clemson College. It aligns with the Biennale’s 2025 theme of “Restore, Regenerate, and Reuse,” exploring the historical past of displacement, colonization, and erasure inside the African diaspora. 

“For the College of Structure and Planning, this isn’t solely an unbelievable honor however a profound accountability,” Abimbola O. Asojo, Ph.D., dean of Morgan State College, stated in an announcement. “As one of many few structure packages housed at an HBCU, this exhibition spotlights the caliber of educators and rising architects we produce. It affirms our place as a significant voice in reimagining inclusive futures by design.”

Whereas that is Morgan State College’s first time main an impartial pavilion, the college made its Venice Biennale debut in 2021 with the collaborative exhibit, “WE The 7: A Dialog with the African Diaspora.

Moreover, Morgan State’s marching band, The Magnificent Marching Machine, visited Venice throughout Artwork Night time Venezia. The June 21 efficiency started with a procession by the town, concluding with a present on the Giardini della Marinaressa. This occasion featured music, spoken phrase, and a West African conventional libation ceremony.  

“ReCall & Response” opened on the Giardini della Marinaressa in Venice on Could 10. Will probably be on show till November 24, 2025.
