The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Denver’s Metropolis Park was vandalized this week in what seems to be a racially motivated act of destruction.

A number of key items of the massive bronze and marble “I Have a Dream” sculpture have been stolen, together with a bronze torch, a bronze angel, and a panel depicting Black navy veterans. The memorial was designed by artist Ed Dwight and put in in 2002 to honor the well-known civil rights chief.

“You’ll be able to steal. You’ll be able to take. You’ll be able to pull. You’ll be able to hate. However you can not detour the message of Dr. King and this Fee. We’ll proceed to march, to honor, and to work towards freedom, justice, racial equality and an finish to discrimination.”

The Denver Police Division is investigating the crime by way of their Bias-Motivated Crime Unit. They are going to analyze proof from the scene and try to find out if racial prejudice performed a task within the memorial’s destruction.

The vandalism has sparked outrage and disappointment amongst Denver’s African American neighborhood, who see the MLK Jr. Memorial as a symbolic landmark honoring civil rights progress. Many are hoping the perpetrators can be caught and held answerable for this disgraceful act of hatred.

However Vern Howard and the Vacation Fee stay undeterred. They are saying the memorial can be restored and King’s dream of justice and equality will reside on in Denver and throughout the nation. This racially-driven vandalism won’t reach erasing or destroying King’s highly effective legacy.
