MJAF’s #DisruptingTheHateWeek 2025

Organizers from the nonprofit Melquain Jatelle Anderson Basis (MJAF) are calling on the group to take part of their “Disrupting the Hate Week” operating Oct. 21-25.

#DisruptingTheHateWeek is MJAF’s annual social media marketing campaign to advertise positivity, inventive expression, and group therapeutic. MJAF, which gives emotional and monetary help to households affected by gun violence, says “Disrupting the Hate Week” encourages everybody to problem hate via creativity, artwork, and love.

“After shedding my solely baby, Melquain, I wished to create one thing that helps our communities heal and stand united towards gun and concrete violence,” states Michelle Barnes-Anderson, founding father of MJAF. Her son Melquain was shot and killed whereas ready for a bus outdoors of the Farragut Homes in Downtown Brooklyn in 2017. He was, on the time, a scholar at John Jay Faculty.

Although Melquain’s life was reduce brief, his mom and aunts — Rev. Mel’s Regulation, enacted by the state of New York, requires SUNY, CUNY, and group faculties to determine procedures for college students’ households to acquire posthumous levels. The legislation was signed on October 25, 2023, marking the sixth anniversary of Melquain’s passing. Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez has launched a federal invoice that’s primarily based on New York’s Mel’s Regulation. The invoice additionally ensures that posthumous levels are granted to school college students who cross away earlier than finishing their coursework. 

“With the signing of Mel’s Regulation in Melquain’s honor,” Barnes-Anderson stated, “we’re displaying that each life taken too quickly nonetheless issues. The highly effective work Melquain was already doing to uplift and add worth to his group continues via this laws. This act provides siblings and youngsters of the fallen — like his daughter, Melkenzye, who was born two months after his homicide — a way of hope and dignity, understanding their liked one’s tutorial journey and goal won’t ever be forgotten. It restores dignity to households and reminds us all that therapeutic is feasible after we come collectively.”

Over the last week of October, MJAF tries to advertise optimistic content material via social media. It begins on his birthday, Oct. 21, which was established as “Melquain’s Day” by Mayor Eric Adams when he was Brooklyn’s Borough President. Oct. 25 marks each the anniversary of when Melquain was killed and the day Gov. Kathy Hochul signed “Mel’s Regulation” into New York State legislation. Assemblymember Phara Souffrant Forrest and State Senator Jabari Brisport launched the invoice.

Those that wish to participate are inspired to have fun by sharing art work and artistic expressions — style, tattooing, sketching, portray, music, poetry, pictures, or Brooklyn-made creativity — tagged with #DisruptingTheHateWeek, honoring Melquain’s spirit and dedication to group.
