Meet William (Invoice) H. Oliver, a husband, father, grandfather, and buddy whose life has been devoted to serving folks. He retired as a deputy chief of investigators within the Essex County, N.J., Prosecutor’s Workplace and was a non-public first-class within the U.S. Military; leisure soccer and basketball coach; and proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., to call just a few of his affiliations.

To some extent, this story is in regards to the measure of a person who is understood for his self-discipline, compassion, integrity, fashion, and wit. At age 84, Oliver workouts often and strikes via life with a youthful spirit. How he treats others and the locations the place he continues to volunteer make him an absolute standout.

Oliver is dedicated to his church house, Fountain Baptist Church (Summit, N.J.).He’s additionally an energetic member of six masonic organizations, in addition to one in all two particular assistants to the president of the New Jersey Chapter of the Nationwide Group of Black Legislation Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).

“These organizations have given me the chance to present again via our normal dedication to enhance lives and uplift circumstances inside our communities,” stated Oliver.

For greater than 50 years, mentorship has been a key a part of Oliver’s life. Born in Montclair and raised in East Orange, N.J., Oliver enlisted within the navy and returned house from service in 1964. Quickly after, with a spouse and a child on the way in which, he turned a corrections officer at a jail in Rahway, N.J. Through the years, just a few extra of his titles had been patrolman, patrol sergeant assigned to the Detective Division of the East Orange Police Division, and captain of investigators within the Essex County Prosecutor’s Workplace.

In 1965, he added the title of coach when Lewis Miles, a former Port Authority police officer and buddy, invited Oliver to begin a sports activities crew known as the East Orange Tigers. Through the years, the title of the crew modified to the East Orange Panther Soccer Program. In later years, they modified sports activities from soccer to basketball and even added a cheerleading squad.

In pondering again to his 30-year interval of teaching with Miles, Oliver talked about one other buddy who helped run their youth leisure program: Jim Pitchford, Oliver, Miles, and Pitchford had been united of their dedication to youth of their hometown of East Orange. In accordance with Oliver, “Probably the most gratifying a part of the entire deal was, we by no means made a penny and I’ll by no means inform you what number of pennies we spent. We did it for the love of the youngsters.”

Whereas tending to household, instructional pursuits, {and professional} obligations, the trio tried to boost funds to offset the prices for the crew’s travels to tournaments in and out of doors of New Jersey. Though they lacked observe tools, equivalent to tackling dummies, they led with love, shared life classes, and gained many video games.

That’s what Ron Harris remembers: “Mr. Oliver was constructing the pipeline of future soccer gamers for the highschool,” he stated. “We had been younger children enjoying. We loved it and he was robust.”

When Harris, an entrepreneur and now a resident of Atlanta, considered being a sixth-grade scholar and operating again, he paused and smiled. Then, he was 11 years previous. Now, at age 66, Harris stated, “Mr. Oliver was so disciplined along with his preparation, you’d have thought teaching was his full-time job. Now that I’m older, what actually impressed all of us is he didn’t have a son on the crew. He handled us like we had been his sons.”

That’s how Oliver handled tons of of boys within the Metropolis of East Orange. Because of this, a brotherhood fashioned.

Simply ask Ralph Jacob and Rob Davenport, former teammates who’ve been mentored by Oliver for greater than 50 years. The 20-year age hole doesn’t matter to them. They see Oliver as their easy, cool, sharp-dressing buddy.

A number of years in the past, about 100 of Oliver’s former athletes got here collectively to shock him at an appreciation dinner. His former crew members reminisced, advised jokes, talked about Oliver’s excessive requirements, and shared desires.

Davenport, CEO of a know-how firm who earned an undergraduate and graduate levels at Harvard College, despatched a letter that stated, “Not like so many fake leaders of younger males, you walked your discuss authentically, and in so doing, helped us determine easy methods to chart our journeys with confidence. Aside from my dad and mom, no different elder of mine had extra affect on me than you. You modeled professionalism, uncompromising integrity, excessive expectations, accountability, and collaboration that I do know I’ve drawn on over the course of my life, notably when my challenges have been biggest. Thanks.” Davenport, 65, additionally mirrored on how Oliver would examine their uniforms proper earlier than a recreation after which say, “All proper, deliver it in.” “We cemented our bond and customary objective in battle by touching palms collectively earlier than asserting our will on opponents.”

Jacob, 68, additionally had vivid reminiscences. Jacob, who retired two years in the past as a principal within the East Orange college district, remembers the friendship his father and Oliver shared. “Exterior of my father, Invoice was most likely one of many first position fashions outdoors of the house,” Jacob stated. Oliver was easy and disciplined — traits Jacob adopted throughout his 36-year profession in schooling. He was additionally easy and continually discovering methods to instill self-discipline in his college students, Jacob stated.

Davenport, Harris, and Jacob plan to journey to the 2026 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Affiliation (CIAA) basketball event, simply as they did just a few years in the past when the CIAA was in Charlotte. “Mr. Oliver is a well-respected man. We noticed it firsthand after we had been with him on the CIAA,” Harris stated. They thought they must assist him really feel snug. As a substitute, Harris stated, it was the opposite manner round.

Harris, who believes Oliver is worthy of Corridor of Fame recognition in East Orange, is aware of Oliver just isn’t motivated by accolades. As a substitute, Oliver retains his eyes centered on service. He was initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. within the fall of 1988 by the Upsilon Phi Chapter, Newark, with three sitting mayors and different profitable professionals. “The Line of Excellence” included former mayors: The Honorable Sharpe James, Newark; Honorable Samuel T. McGhee, Hillside; and Honorable Robert Brown, Orange.

Excellence is the muse of Oliver’s legacy. When paraphrasing a well-liked quote, he stated, “The final word take a look at of a person’s conscience could also be his willingness to sacrifice one thing right now for future generations whose phrases of thanks won’t be heard.” In accordance with Oliver, “When it’s all stated and accomplished, I wish to be remembered as having been a superb particular person — somebody who had a superb coronary heart and was all the time keen to assist.”
