A lately up to date grooming coverage issued by the US Marine Corps is being slammed by advocates for negatively concentrating on Black male service members.

The coverage is a reversal of a decades-long waiver that allowed Black males with coarse or curly hair to electively put on their beards on account of a pores and skin situation. The waivers allowed Black service members to keep away from the navy’s necessities for males to be clean-shaven.

In March, the Marine Corps issued a brand new steerage on pseudofolliculitis, or PFB, which is a pores and skin situation extra generally often called razor bumps or ingrown hairs. PFB disproportionately impacts Black males (60%), in keeping with the American Osteopathic Faculty of Dermatology. Regardless of permitting waivers because the Seventies, the brand new steerage from the Marine Corps now states that the situation may result in a service member being expelled from the navy department if the difficulty persists, reviews NBC Information.

In January, the U.S. Air Power additionally up to date its steerage on the pores and skin situation, informing service members that waivers will expire 90 days after one’s subsequent annual well being examination. The navy department didn’t point out what the necessities could be to nonetheless qualify for a waiver.

The Marine Corps says that its new steerage will greatest place the navy department for “warfighting functionality” and that service members with PFB must endure a medical analysis inside 90 days. If their situation doesn’t enhance inside a 12 months below a four-part remedy plan, they may very well be separated from the department on the discretion of their commanding officer, in keeping with NBC.

A Marine Corps coverage in 2022 barred service members from being kicked out of service solely based mostly on PFB, because it was decided that topical remedy doesn’t successfully deal with the pores and skin situation. Dermatologists, together with a navy dermatologist, advised NBC the most recent coverage reversal on PFB waivers are pointless and has “nothing to do with readiness.”

“The Marine Corps’ new directive concentrating on medical shaving waivers for razor bumps — a well-known situation within the Marine Corps that disproportionately impacts Black males — represents one other discriminatory coverage enacted below a Secretary of Protection with a historical past of hostility to Black individuals,” Kyle Bibby, co-CEO and co-founder of Black Veterans Undertaking, advised theGrio.

Secretary of Protection Pete Hegseth has aggressively pushed President Donald Trump’s agenda to finish range, fairness and inclusion insurance policies, calling DEI and “wokeness” a menace to navy energy and preparedness. “We’re carried out with that sh–,” he mentioned earlier this month.

The Black Veterans Undertaking notes that Black service members make up a bigger proportion of the navy in comparison with their total illustration within the civilian inhabitants. Due to this fact, the brand new coverage on PFB creates “pointless obstacles to service for Black Marines and poses its personal menace to navy readiness that outweigh any concern round grooming requirements,” mentioned Bibby.

“These medical waivers have existed for many years with out compromising mission effectiveness and the navy routinely relaxes grooming requirements for operational wants,” he added. “Threatening administrative separation for Marines needing longer-term medical waivers reveals the true intent: forcing Black Marines out of service for situations past their management.”
