Mali political parties express discontent after junta delays election

Malian political teams expressed outrage on Wednesday, 27 September 2023, on the junta’s determination to postpone indefinitely the presidential election that was presupposed to carry again civilian rule.

The ruling junta on Monday introduced a delay to a presidential election scheduled for February within the jihadist-hit West African nation. New dates for the voting “shall be communicated later,” a authorities spokesman had mentioned.

What have been the explanations for the postponement?

The explanations given for the postponement included points linked to the adoption this 12 months of a brand new structure and a overview of the electoral lists.

The spokesman additionally cited a dispute with French firm Idemia, which the junta says is concerned within the census course of.
