Loyola University New Orleans Students Protest The Firing of the English Department’s Only Black Professor

College students at Loyola College New Orleans are expressing their outrage after the dismissal of the college’s solely Black English professor, stories Inside Greater Ed.

Final week, greater than 100 college students and a few members of the college gathered exterior the college’s administration constructing to voice their displeasure with the college’s determination to not renew the contract of R. Scott Heath’s contract final fall.

Heath, who can be the one Black tenure-track English professor at Loyala College New Orleans and director of the African and African American Research program, stated his contract will expire on the finish of this educational 12 months.

“Nobody has sat me down and stated, ‘This is the reason we’re not going to reappoint you,’” Heath stated.

The fallout started in October when he was late to submit an annual submission to the college as a result of he had simply returned from planning his greatest good friend’s funeral. Heath claims that he was not notified that the English division’s 5 tenured school members voted to not renew his contract as a result of he did not make the submission. Carson Cruse, a sophomore and president of the college’s Younger Democratic Socialists of America chapter and an organizer of the protest, stated that Heath’s firing was unjust.

“It is a clear assault on DEI at Loyola,” Cruse argued.

Moreover, a petition was created with over 600 signatures from college students characterizing Heath as “among the best educators they’ve engaged with at Loyola.”

“Dr. Heath is a useful school adviser to Loyola College New Orleans NAACP and Loyola’s Caribbean and African Scholar Affiliation,” the petition says. “He additionally serves as a consultant within the Loyola College New Orleans College Senate, the Loyola College New Orleans Board of Trustees Committee on Mission and Identification, and lately as a college stakeholder within the Loyola College New Orleans presidential search.”

Within the aftermath of his removing, Heath filed an enchantment with the college’s conciliation committee to overturn the English division’s determination.
