James Washington, the president and normal supervisor of The Atlanta Voice, a longtime advocate of the Black press, and the 2019 Nationwide Affiliation of Black Journalist Legacy Award winner handed away surrounded by household and family members on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
He was 73.
For over 4 many years Washington had been concerned in almost each degree of the communications subject. From his time because the writer of The Dallas Weekly, a Black-owned and operated publication, to his work as the general public relations supervisor for the Dallas Ballet, Washington had at all times been a robust illustration of Black excellence and intelligence.
Washington has twice served on the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce board, the Dallas Arboretum, the United Method of Metropolitan Dallas, and the Nationwide Newspaper Publishers Affiliation. He’s a former tri-chair of Dallas’ Fee on Race Relations and the Dallas Collectively Discussion board. He’s additionally a former member of the Federal Reserve Financial institution’s Small Enterprise and Agriculture Advisory Committee in Dallas. Jim was named “Man of the Yr” in 1986 by the Dallas Metropolitan Membership of Negro Enterprise and Skilled Ladies.

Washington earned his bachelor’s diploma in English and Tutorial Media from Traditionally Black School and College, Southern College. He additionally earned a grasp’s diploma in journalism from the College of Wisconsin-Madison.

Washington is survived by his spouse, The Atlanta Voice writer Janis Ware, his youngsters, daughter Elena Bonifay (husband David Bonifay) and son Patrick Washington (spouse Jessica Washington), his grandchildren James Spencer Emanuel Washington, Penelope Elena Jimenez Washington, William Emmanuel Edward Austin Bonifay and his nieces and nephews. A memorial service will likely be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 10 on the Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta.
