Public faculties reopened Monday within the nation’s tense capital with dad and mom on edge over the presence of their midst of 1000’s of Nationwide Guard troops — some now armed — and enormous scatterings of federal regulation enforcement officers finishing up President Donald Trump’s orders to make the District of Columbia a safer place.

At the same time as Trump began speaking about different cities — “Don’t come to Chicago,” was the Democratic Illinois governor’s clipped response — the president once more touted a drop in crime that he attributed to his extraordinary effort to take over policing in Washington, D.C. The district’s mayor, in the meantime, was lamenting the impact of Trump’s actions on kids in her metropolis.

“Dad and mom are anxious. We’ve heard from a number of them,” Mayor Muriel Bowser mentioned at a information convention, noting that some may hold their kids out of faculty due to immigration considerations.

“Any try to focus on kids is heartless, is imply, is uncalled for and it solely hurts us,” she mentioned. “I’d simply name for everyone to depart our children alone.”

Rumors of police exercise abound

As faculties opened throughout the capital metropolis, parental social media teams and listservs have been buzzing with reviews and rumors of checkpoints and arrests.

The week started with some patrolling Nationwide Guard items now carrying firearms. The change stemmed from a directive issued late final week by his Protection Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Armed Nationwide Guard troops from Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee have been seen across the metropolis Monday. However not each patrol seems to be carrying weapons. An Related Press photographer mentioned the roughly 30 troops he noticed on the Nationwide Mall on Monday morning have been unarmed.

Armed Guard members in Washington will probably be working below long-standing guidelines for the usage of navy pressure contained in the U.S., the navy process pressure overseeing all of the troops deployed to D.C. mentioned Monday. These guidelines, broadly, say that whereas troops can use pressure, they need to achieve this solely “in response to an imminent menace of dying or critical bodily hurt” and “solely as a final resort.”

The duty pressure has directed questions on why the change was essential to Hegseth’s workplace. These officers have declined to reply these questions. Talking within the Oval Workplace on Monday, Hegseth mentioned that it was frequent sense to arm them as a result of it meant they have been “able to defending themselves and others.”

Amongst their duties is choosing up trash, the duty pressure mentioned, although it’s unclear how a lot time they may spend doing that.

Bowser reiterated her opposition to the Nationwide Guard’s presence. “I don’t imagine that troops ought to be policing American cities,” she mentioned.

Trump is contemplating increasing the deployments to different Democratic-led cities, together with Baltimore, Chicago and New York, saying the conditions in these cities require federal motion. In Washington, his administration says greater than 1,000 individuals have been arrested since Aug. 7, together with 86 on Sunday.

“We took tons of of weapons away from younger children, who have been throwing them round prefer it was sweet. We apprehended scores of unlawful aliens. We seized dozens of unlawful firearms. There have been zero murders,” Trump mentioned Monday.

Another cities bristle at the potential of navy on the streets

The potential of the navy patrolling streets of Chicago, the nation’s third-largest metropolis, prompted speedy backlash, confusion and a path of sarcastic social media posts.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, a first-term Democrat, has referred to as it unconstitutional and threatened authorized motion. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker deemed it a distraction and pointless as crime charges in Chicago are down, as they’re nationwide.

Trump urged a number of occasions earlier Monday that he may dispatch the Nationwide Guard to Chicago no matter Pritzker’s opinion, calling the town a “killing area.”

Pritzker and different Illinois officers mentioned the Trump administration has not reached out to Chicago leaders about any federal initiative to deploy navy personnel to the town to fight crime. They cited statistics exhibiting drops in violent crime in Chicago and solid Trump’s transfer as performative, partisan and racist.

“Mr. President, don’t come to Chicago,” Pritzker mentioned, standing in a park a couple of mile from the Chicago skyscraper that options Trump’s title in massive lettering. The governor mentioned he would struggle the “petty whims of an boastful little man” who “needs to make use of the navy to occupy a U.S. metropolis, punish his dissidents and rating political factors.”

Others raised questions on the place patrols may go and what position they could play. By sq. mileage, Chicago is greater than thrice the dimensions of Washington, and neighborhoods with traditionally excessive crime are unfold far aside.

Former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, who additionally labored for the New York Police Division, questioned what the Nationwide Guard would do when it comes to preventing road violence. He mentioned if there was clear communication, they may assist with sure duties, like perimeter patrol in high-crime neighborhoods, however solely as a part of a wider plan and in partnership with police.

Nationwide Guard troops have been utilized in Chicago to assist with the Democratic Nationwide Conference final summer time and in the course of the 2012 NATO Summit.

General, violent crime in Chicago dropped considerably within the first half of 2025, representing the steepest decline in over a decade, in line with police knowledge. Shootings and homicides have been down greater than 30% within the first half of the 12 months in contrast with the identical time final 12 months, and complete violent crime dropped by over 22%.

Nonetheless, some neighborhoods, together with Austin on the town’s West Aspect, the place the Rev. Ira Acree is a pastor, expertise persistent excessive crime.

Acree mentioned he’s acquired quite a few calls from congregants upset in regards to the attainable deployment. He mentioned if Trump was critical about crime prevention, he would increase funding for anti-violence initiatives.

“It is a joke,” Acree mentioned. “This transfer will not be about lowering violence. That is reckless management and political grandstanding. It’s no secret that our metropolis is on the president’s hit checklist.”

In June, roughly 4,000 Nationwide Guard troops and 700 Marines have been despatched to Los Angeles to cope with protests over the administration’s immigration crackdown. California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, and different native elected officers objected.
