Regulation & Order: Organized Crime star Danielle Moné Truitt is taking a break from being a part of an ensemble solid to current her one-woman play 3: Black Woman Blues in Los Angeles. Conceived by the actress and co-written with Anthony D’Juan, the play facilities round three shut associates from childhood: Keisha, Jill, and Stephanie, who should confront their adult-life demons. “The tales on this play are impressed by the ladies that myself and Anthony have identified, cherished, realized from, could not stand, and had long-term friendships with,” Truitt tells EBONY. “They’re our moms, our aunties, and our sisters.”

Together with creating and starring in 3: Black Woman Blues, her firm Truitt Love Productions, together with CMA Leisure, are behind the presentation. “After we create our personal works, we give voice to distinctive views and tales, and as Black artists, I believe that is actually vital.”

How do you relate to every girl you might be enjoying in 3: Black Woman Blues?

I did not all the time assume I associated to those characters. I used to be too refined to be Keisha, a lot stronger than Jill, and never profitable sufficient as Stephanie. As I continued to mature and develop these characters, I spotted I used to be every part that they had been. I truly feared these girls as a result of embracing all of them meant I needed to embrace all of me and that was scary for me. I am a multitude. I am making an attempt to determine life out and to be my finest with the playing cards I used to be dealt—and so are they. I am additionally hilarious, pushed, and fly. And I am a mother, a profession girl, and just a little hood at coronary heart. I used to be impressed by my quest for self-actualization, my want to seek out self-worth, and though I did not realize it on the time, a deep want for self-love and to face the ugly components of myself.

What do you do to get into character for every function?

Entering into character for me is about loosening up my physique and respiratory in order that the work I put in throughout rehearsal can simply movement via me. I’ve some fairly humorous warm-ups that I do earlier than I come out on stage. I do know these characters as I do know myself: they simply want a transparent thoughts and physique and an open coronary heart to reside! I am very clear on what they need and I play these intentions all through the efficiency. Once I swap from one character to the following, I take advantage of the time that I am turning into their costumes to alter my physique language and my mindset to the place that character is. It is a fairly fast course of.

What is the message behind the play for Black girls and our life experiences?

I believe the message is that we aren’t a monolith. That it is okay for us to disintegrate and never be good. We do not all the time should be sturdy. However we do have a duty to heal ourselves and to make psychological well being a precedence. Additionally, we as Black girls want one another! Sisterhood is crucial. Honoring one another and our friendships must be a precedence.

You’re additionally a producer! Why is it vital to be in command of our personal artistic work?

There’s a quote that I noticed years in the past that claims, “If alternative would not knock, construct a door.” I’ve by no means waited round for others to solid me or give me alternatives. That mindset helped me keep inspired on my journey. It additionally empowered me to create issues that spoke to my expertise on the earth.

You are balancing motherhood with a long-distance job. How do you make it work?

I’ve no alternative however to make it work. My boys are my first precedence. I need to give them life however I additionally need to be part of it. Being a bicoastal working mom may be very difficult and I’ve struggled fairly a bit with mother guilt. I’m blessed to have a brilliant supportive tribe of family and friends who remind me continuously that I’m cherished by my boys. They remind me to handle myself and that issues won’t all the time be this manner. My ex-husband and I’ve achieved a fairly first rate job co-parenting in order that can be useful. Lastly, God and His hand in my life makes all of this potential. I positively would not be capable of navigate all of this with out His grace.

What’s one thing you and your two sons like to do collectively?

We like to have film nights at residence! Popcorn, ice cream, and a humorous film are all we’d like. My oldest often falls asleep midway via the film it doesn’t matter what, and my youngest is all the time irritated that I get to have an grownup drink and he cannot!

You are a part of the legacy franchise Regulation & Order. What do you like about your character, Sergeant Ayanna Bell?

It is fairly cool! I am pleased to painting the primary Black feminine LGBTQ character on this franchise. There have not been that many Black leads in Regulation & Order historical past. I really like that Ayanna is aware of who she is and is aware of her worth. I really like how she protects her workforce and has braveness within the face of adversity. I additionally love that she is unapologetically Black and rocks pure hairstyles. She’s no joke. I really like her.

3: Black Woman Blues is enjoying for 3 consecutive weekends on the Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles beginning Might 19.
