Jarrett Hill Debuts Solo Art Exhibition At Harvard University

Hill traded in his pen and laptop computer for paintbrushes at Harvard Divinity Faculty.

After spending greater than 20 years placing phrases to paper—books and on-line—award-winning journalist and creator Jarrett Hill centered on paintbrushes and artwork at Harvard Divinity Faculty (HDS).

He created greater than 40 items throughout his time in this system. Almost two dozen of his items are a part of his first solo artwork exhibition, “jarrett hill: An Artist Lives Right here.”

“I got here to divinity college seeking to get solutions about being Queer and Black within the Black church custom,” he tells BLACK ENTERPRISE.

Hill’s exhibition takes folks on his journey of trying to find solutions to questions he had as a toddler about race, tradition, and sexuality throughout the Black church.

“[I wanted to get] a strong sense of how I felt and the way I understood God to narrate to queer and trans folks.”

Hill says he received his solutions fairly shortly within the HDS program and now feels extra liberated and extra linked to God.

“Whereas my relationship with the church has modified, my relationship with God has solely gotten higher,” Hill provides. “It’s solely gotten deeper and extra thorough and extra textured.”

Jarrett Hill’s Artwork Exhibition At Harvard Tackles The Relationship Between Black Church and Queer Group

Portray and drawing have at all times been retailers for Hill to precise himself artistically, so he selected artwork to mirror on his tutorial, emotional, and theological progress throughout his time at HDS.

Hill says some of the transformative works in his assortment is “Create From Your Middle.”

It’s a chunk that reveals motion inside and out of doors of what seems to be a coronary heart. The motion is about every part radiating out and in of the guts. The piece is about listening to your coronary heart, physique, and the middle. Hill hopes items within the exhibition reminiscent of this may encourage folks to confront among the questions in their very own lives and make area for the concepts they might be ignoring.

“I would like folks to ask themselves, what’s that factor that’s in me that’s been making an attempt to come back out? […] or the factor that perks up my ear once I hear it, however I ignore it?”

He provides, “This exhibition displays my paradigm-shifting journey, exploring how this time in divinity college has helped me to extra deeply perceive, course of, and begin to heal my expertise.”

As for what’s subsequent for Hill, he additionally has a background in inside design. He tells BE he plans to show a few of his artworks into items for the house.
