‘It wasn’t [nothing] they could do about it’: Doechii reflects on bold BET speech condemning ICE raids

Doechii is intentional about how she makes use of her platform. Final month, the rapper went viral for condemning the Trump administration’s ICE raids and response to protests whereas accepting the award for “Greatest Feminine Hip Hop Artist “on the 2025 BET Awards. In a current interview with British Vogue, the rapper remained equally as unapologetic about her determination to talk out on stage. 

“I’m not that desensitized, and it felt proper,” she advised the outlet. “I felt like I wanted to make use of that second, they usually had been reside, so it wasn’t s— they may do about it.” 

Because the BET Awards befell in Los Angeles on June 9, simply blocks away, protesters had been flooding the streets in response to the immigration crackdowns that had been going down throughout the town. Doechii recalled the moments that led as much as that second. “What kind of presidency is that?” she continued in her speech. “Individuals are being swept up and torn from their households, and I really feel it’s my duty as an artist to make use of this second to talk up for all oppressed individuals: for Black individuals, for Latino individuals, for trans individuals, for the individuals in Gaza. All of us should reside in hope and never in concern, and I hope we stand collectively, my brothers and my sisters, towards hate and we protest towards it.”

Whether or not via music or her platform, Doechii is just not afraid to advocate for what’s proper.
