Innocent Black Man Ambushed By Police Files Lawsuit After Video Proves His Innocence

Nationwide — Jeffrey Sutton, an African American man from Bloomfield, New Jersey, is suing his native police division after being shot a number of occasions throughout a 2020 arrest try. He says officers lied concerning the incident, claiming he tried to run them over, although the video later confirmed in any other case.

In November 2020, Sutton was driving his Mercedes-Benz by means of downtown Bloomfield when unmarked police automobiles out of the blue boxed him in. However Captain Gary Peters allegedly pointed a gun at his head and shouted threats as an alternative of de-escalating.

Sutton says he begged for his life, explaining he was unarmed. Two officers finally holstered their weapons, however Peters remained hostile. Fearing for his security, Sutton tried to again away once more and by accident hit one other automobile. At that second, Peters and one other officer opened fireplace, putting him a number of occasions and badly injuring his arm.

Information footage later confirmed Sutton was driving away from the officers, not towards them. Regardless of that, police experiences falsely claimed he tried to ram them, resulting in a number of fees. Most had been dismissed as soon as the movies surfaced, and Sutton pleaded responsible solely to eluding police.

After spending greater than three years in jail, Sutton filed a lawsuit accusing the officers of extreme power, false reporting, and racial bias. He argues that Bloomfield police have a protracted file of concentrating on Black and Latino residents, citing a Seton Corridor research exhibiting that the division used power disproportionately towards minorities.

Now 42, Sutton continues to reside with nerve harm and emotional trauma.
