Indiana State College is underneath hearth for the way it responded to 1 white scholar’s racist video publish about Black individuals in nation music.

Protests ignited on the college’s campus this week after one scholar took to Yik Yak, a social media app for school college students, to inform Black individuals they “should not nation.” A Twitter repost of the racist rant recognized the scholar as Asa Blanton, a nursing main on the faculty who had no subject placing her unfiltered racist views on show.

“I’m sorry, however for those who’re Black, you’re not nation. I don’t care,” the scholar stated. “I want I meant that within the nicest means, however babe, I do know you had been raised within the nation or your grandparents had been … however they was choosing, OK?”

She added, “They wasn’t planting. Simply hold that in thoughts. They wasn’t earning profits. They had been getting bought for cash. You ain’t nation.”

Blanton’s tirade seemed to be in response to the success of Beyoncé’s record-breaking nation album, “Cowboy Carter,” which made her the primary album by a Black girl to prime the nation charts. She additionally debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking the largest gross sales for an album in 2024.

On Monday, April 8, Indiana State College launched a press release responding to the video that sparked outrage on the college’s campus.

“As said in our College Mission Assertion, Indiana State College has a protracted historical past of valuing range and inclusiveness on our campus. We’re conscious and proceed to watch the state of affairs involving feedback printed on-line by an Indiana State College scholar,” officers stated, as captured by the Terre Haute Tribune-Star.

“The scholar’s feedback don’t align with our institutional values. We reaffirm our dedication to fostering an inclusive surroundings. ISU takes incidents of this nature critically and is dedicated to making sure a welcoming surroundings for everybody.”

That very same day, college students took to the pavement to rally towards the college’s response to Blanton’s video. Many assume extra motion needs to be taken contemplating Blanton learning to be a nurse and the potential for her racial bias including to the disparities already plaguing Black individuals within the healthcare business.

A member of the college’s Black Alumni Community needs the college to be extra clear about its stance towards racism and hate speech.

“What I wish to see is ISU come out and outline their coverage on hate speech. It needs to be outlined,” Darrell Morton Jr., president of the college’s Black Alumni Community, stated.
